Gallery hours 12-6pm today!
Come see our current exhibition, “Contrapuntals: New Work by Intel Lastierre and Vy Ngo”

Exhibition Dates: Sept 25 - Oct 24, 2026
Opening Reception: September 25, 7-10 pm
Artist talk:  October 15th, 6-8 pm with Sabrina Mooroogen Ph.D., Equity Through Arts
Gallery Hours: Friday and Saturday, 12-6 pm and by appointment

Contrapuntals takes its title from music, where two or more independent melodic lines unfold simultaneously. Rather than merging into a single voice, each retains its own integrity, creating moments of harmony, tension, and dissonance. The exhibition adopts this structure as a way of thinking about the conversation between the work of Intel Lastierre and Vy Ngo. Each artist approaches questions of history, power, and identity from a distinct perspective, generating meaning through proximity and difference. Rather than seeking resolution, Contrapuntals asks what becomes possible when distinct voices remain in conversation. by @icosa_art

Happy Filipino American History Month!!!!

Dedicated to the Filipino diaspora, in remembrance of those who were represented and displayed at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition.

Metropolitan Grotesques / Kakatwang Dagway ng Dakbanwa, 2026

Oil on panel and styrene poster, 31 × 13 1/2 × 3’4”, 6 pieces

About the work:

Metropolitan Grotesques examines the genealogy of the colonial gaze and how European ways of seeing transformed human difference into spectacle. Drawing from Renaissance grotesque art and early representations of “monstrous races,” including those found in Hartmann Schedel’s Nuremberg Chronicle, the series traces how unfamiliar bodies were imagined, classified, and represented as strange or inferior. These ways of seeing later extended into colonial science, museums, and human exhibitions, where non-Western peoples were observed and displayed as representations of difference.

The series draws heavily from the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, where Filipinos were exhibited in the Philippine Reservation shortly after the United States colonized the Philippines. Communities including Igorots, Moros, Visayans, and others were removed from their homes and placed in constructed villages where Western audiences could observe and scrutinize their bodies, clothing, traditions, and daily activities. They were displayed as representations of an “uncivilized” colony, transforming their lives and cultures into public spectacle. The exhibition created a colonial image of the Philippines as primitive and in need of American intervention, reinforcing ideas of Western superiority while presenting empire as education, progress, and civilization.

Rendered in monochromatic green, the fluid, metamorphic figures resist colonial systems of classification. Rather than portraying the colonized body as grotesque, Metropolitan Grotesques turns the grotesque back onto the structures that created these images.

P.S. Our stories deserve to be told from our perspective, too.
