Born on this day in 1862, Ida B. Wells was a fearless journalist, educator, and activist who refused to be silent in the face of injustice.

She risked her life to document the horrors of lynching in America, challenged white supremacy with her pen, and co-founded the NAACP. She taught us that truth-telling is a form of resistance and that justice is not given — it’s demanded.

Today, we honor her legacy by continuing the fight for freedom, dignity, and equity. 🙌🏾🖤

Today, I’m taking a moment to bask in and celebrate a powerful moment in history — the dedication of a historic marker at the Bricklayers Hall in Montgomery, Alabama, on Saturday, June 5, 2021. This sacred space once served as a meeting place for the civil rights movement, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself utilized office space. The day was made even more meaningful by the presence of Mayor Steven Reed, Dr. Bernice King, and legendary activist Doris Crenshaw, who spoke with wisdom, passion, and purpose alongside so many others.

In God’s providence, after 20 years of advocacy in the fight against domestic violence, my journey expanded in 2016 when I joined the @institutefornonviolencechicago . I was ecstatic to discover their foundation rested on the Kingian principles of nonviolence — and I took this selfie during my very first week at INVC, moved by the legacy I was stepping into.

Now, 9 years later, I am deeply humbled to serve as the Director of Place Innovation powered by @girltrek, in our new home at the very Bricklayers Union Hall where history was made. This is more than just a building — it’s a living monument to the power of organizing, healing, and radical joy.

Thank you to the @cityofmontgomery, @morgantreks & @vanessatreks for your “Yes” to begin this movement and the many, many, many voices who made this moment possible. May this marker serve not just as a reminder of where we’ve been, but a call to continue the movement of Joy and Justice. ✊🏽💙🧡 #Nonviolence #CivilRights #MontgomeryHistory #BricklayersHall #JoyAndJustice #GirlTREK #KingianPrinciples taken in Montgomery, Alabama by @ideaspasm
