B.R.E.A.D: Beyond Resilience Elemental Acts of Design

Every autumn term, our second-year IDE students embark on a three-day team bonding exercise to prepare for their upcoming group project.

This year, at the @Grymsdyke farm, they stepped into a fictional scenario called B.R.E.A.D - Beyond Resilience Elemental Acts of Design.

🌽 The challenge? As a community, design and build field-deployable mechanical production lines to make corn flatbread from grain.

Working in 12 teams across 2 parallel production lines, the students had to build machines for milling, sieving, mixing, measuring, pressing, and baking. All of it in 72 hours.

They could only use the material provided by the staff and locally sourced waste material. Everything must be powered mechanically. No electricity. No additive manufacturing. No Internet. No AI. No supply chains. Just hands-on design and collaboration.

🎥 Watch the video to show how they tackled the challenge!

A huge thank you to Grymsdykefarm Farm for hosting us again this year! Videography @joeltrotter1988

📣 Announcing the winners of the 9th @pokemon scholarship at the Royal College of Art, @emilymillward1 and @joeymoredesign!

The scholarship from the RCA and the Pokémon with You Foundation supports the next generation of creative pioneers. The 2026/2027 Pokémon Scholarship funds two RCA students pushing boundaries in design, visual arts, and communications.

Emily Millward (MA Architecture) is a designer exploring the intersection of architecture, visual narrative and drawing. Her recent work explores complex ecological systems, developing fluid, multi-scalar drawing methodologies to reveal the hidden impacts of human activity around Lake Windermere and their consequences for the lake’s ecology.

Joey More (MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering) is a design engineer interested in creative applications of technology to tackle complex problems. Recent works have included a bespoke CNC needle felting machine to create woollen objects with complex internal structure, a smart ‘pet rock’ for self-soothing on the go, and a custom data visualisation platform for researchers and policy makers to understand global trade infrastructure.

Beyond receiving scholarship support for their studies, the pair will also be invited on an exclusive visit to The Pokémon Company’s headquarters in Japan 🇯🇵 Emily Millward and Joey More at the Pokémon Company with a giant Pikachu character and lots o shelves of Pokémon characters in the background, they are holding trophies. by @idecourse

An inclusive app supporting visually-impaired users to do their make-up independently has won the Helen Hamlyn Design Award 2026 💄

The annual Helen Hamlyn Design Awards recognise creativity in people-centred, inclusive design celebrating the most visionary, inclusive and innovative projects.

The awards are organised by the RCA’s Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design (@hhcdesignrca) – a global leader in inclusive design, design thinking and creative leadership.

This year there are three winners ⬇️

🔴 Check My Look by Hanming Xu (Royal College of Art | MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering, 2026) won the Helen Hamlyn Design Award 2026.

Developed through interviews, co-design and prototype testing with blind and partially sighted people, Check My Look translates visual information into clear, actionable feedback using computer vision and voice guidance to help visually impaired users confidently and independently apply their make-up.

🔵 Ziv’s Bicycle by Shai Shinfeld & Roi Apter (Holon Institute of Technology) won the Helen Hamlyn Fixperts Award

Industrial design students Shai and Roi designed adaptive bicycle attachments for Ziv, a five-year-old boy with hypertonia in his left limbs. Focused on helping Zin gain independence and eliminating the need for assistance the team's bike design features an adjustable pedal add-on that provides an easy, intuitive mount and steady grip to keep Ziv’s foot secure, while allowing a quick-release for safety, alongside a handlebar extension that brings the grip closer to his body for better control.

🟢 Mind the Yap by April Clough, Diana Osisigu Ndubuisi, Brook Shields, Yang Song, Zhixuan Zhou & Talia Stollman (Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London).

Working closely with their Fix Partner, Edward, the design team developed a bespoke board game, Mind the Yap, inspired by Edward’s life story and interests. Together, they created a playful way for people to share experiences, exchange ideas, and build confidence through conversation, encouraging others to learn from Edward’s journey and from each other.

Meet the student using peanut butter to combat invasive species 🥜

Zac is the mastermind behind Project Ruru; a simple, low-cost sensor with a lure that detects dangerous predators in New Zealand's wilderness.

By detecting sounds made by animals as they lap up the peanut butter, they can be caught before they affect native species like Kiwi birds!

The Project will help towards #PredatorFree2050: New Zealand's aim to eradicate harmful introduced predators by 2050.

Zac showcased his work as part of the Innovation and Design Engineering Summer Show, with other classmates from the joint @imperialdyson @royalcollegeofart course.

Zac has received funding from the RCA and @Pokemon with You Foundation scholarship, which supports designers transforming the art and design landscape. by @idecourse

"Designers have a major opportunity...to create products that are not only beautiful and culturally desirable, but also deeply supportive of long-term human wellbeing.” @tims_barefoot_shoes

As an MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering @idecourse student at the Royal College of Art, Tim Brennan developed a new approach to footwear design that allowed the foot to work as nature intended. His shoe, @vivobarefoot, went into production a year after graduating — sparking the modern barefoot running movement.

"The initial idea came from a very simple question: what would footwear look like if its purpose was not to interfere with the natural function of the foot?"

Continuing his work as a design innovator, Tim is now working on the AirPoise Chair. Unlike conventional ergonomic chairs, the AirPoise Chair removes lumbar support entirely and instead uses an adaptive upper back support to help the body achieve natural alignment.

"The chair supports the back while still leaving it free to change shape and move naturally, this is made possible by a low-pressure air-filled support system that is currently patent pending."

Following its launch at Isola as part of Milan design week, AirPoise has been successfully licensed to UK manufacturer Ergochair with first deliveries expected later in 2026.
