One more roll, to conclude a beautiful year!

Looking at my trophy cabinet, it has been a pretty quiet year. But I do feel like I had an immensely successful year! I got to compete and had a great time doing so, loving all the lessons I learned from it. I got to meet and train with new people and even got to meet some of my idols! I sustained some pretty bad injuries but had the chance to heal them and return to the mat, again and again.

Every time I step on the mat, whether it be with a heavy heart, broken body or the optimism and energy of a young labrador I always do so with an immense gratitude and appreciation for this fiery crucible.

I just wanted to take a minute, appreciate the journey and thank everyone for the beautiful ride we share in this crazy undertaking of Jiu Jitsu and life.

Love you guys, wish you all the best for 2026, see you on the mats💪❤️‍🔥🪽

Going home to the flames

Last weekend I did my fourth competition and results varied. One win, three losses. I’m happy with the win but every match revealed some key-holes in my game that need stitching. Very thankful for my coach @arnoudterpstra to have combed through the recorded material with me and to come up with a plan for expansion and galvanization of my game. Looking forward to working on it.

But there is more to work on; mindset. I tried to step on the competition mat as cool as possible. I tried to suppress my excitement and lean into a stoic state. I found out, that’s not me. I love competition. I love the adrenaline, the heightened awareness, the excitement, everything that assures me that I’m alive and there is a fire burning inside of me that wants to do whatever it takes to get us where we need to be. I want to embrace that feeling and bring it to the next match in a controlled manner.

In reflection I realized that every experience I put myself through reveals things about myself. Jiu Jitsu is about as pure of an experience one can get and thus the subsequent revelations are as clear as can be. When @chrisszil was cranking the shit out of my neck, every fiber of my body wanted to make it stop. Spirit told me that the only way was through and never tap to pressure. When I botched the guard pass in my second match and we got back on our feet, my morality was low. But I kept reengaging. This competition revealed to me, that I will always keep coming. No matter how bleak the circumstance, how broken I feel, how small the chance of success, I will find a switch, flip it and keep coming. That is who I am.

Now I will return to the fiery forge of our training room and hammer out the chinks in my game.

Osss🙏❤️‍🔥🪽

Appreciation post!

Life is complex. It's complexiteit can be overwhelming if the degree of complexity outwheighs ones competency in dealing with complex problems.

In it's most fundamental mechanics, jiu jitsu continuously presents us with novel complex problems and hones our ability to not only deal with said problems but to learn from them. And because every training partner is vastly different and every match is a unique exchange of information, our greatest source of novel complexity, are the people we grapple with.

We have evolved to seek out novel and complex information, for it is tantemount to our survivability to competently deal with unexpected trouble.

It never ceases to amaze me that we have been able te gamify this evolutionairy function and that there are little pockets of dedicated individuals contributing to the development of this beauitful sport all around the world. I will be forever grateful and appreciative to have lived in a time where we got to share our appreciation for evolution and life itself by continously running the crucible of combat. It makes me feel connected to life itself in ways I cannot describe.🙏❤️‍🔥🪽

Big shoutout to @simonekaren for being an amazing camera woman and shooting these dope ass shots.

Meeting the force of Chaos!

So this week I had the incredible opportunity to meet @craigjonesbjj at @apex_jiujitsu in Enschede. The man laid down some seriously ingenious escapes for armbars and triangle-locked back control, which I will definitely drill and use in the future. After some technique, Jones did a Q&A, a photo op and some rolling. I even got to meet @neanderthalbjj who struck me as a really genuine, radiant warm person.🫡

To me, Craig Jones represents the best ideas and attitudes in the sport of submission grappling today. The maximization of entertainment for all parties involved, inviting the spirit of play by never taking oneself or one’s endeavors too seriously and placing shared joy in the sport above maximizing material gain. And even though it pains me that I missed the opportunity to roll with the legend himself, I am happy to have shook his hand and extend my appreciation in person.❤️‍🔥🙏

I’ll definitely look out for another seminar to get a roll in and stress-test the escapes! Until then, please stop asking me if I rolled with him.🥹

We had fun at the seminar, definitely, but the real crazy stuff started happening on the drive home. When the homie @evanmeijer put in his macdonalds order on table 666, the whole system crashed. The building started to shake, the heavens started to rumble and I turned into to Hamburgler. When we walked out, a giant ball of light stared at us from the sky and we did the only thing that really made sense… Hotboxed the car and laughed all the way home❤️‍🔥😈🤙 taken in Apex Jiu-Jitsu by @ideedejager

Exploring the lands down under!

This past weekend I had the great pleasure and privilege to join in one of @deltajiujitsu.nl modern leg locking seminars.

The first lesson came with the definition of cross-ashi, being a leg entanglement with the opponent’s leg crossed diagonally over one’s legs, in contrast to a straight-ashi, which was the only leg entanglement position I knew. A cross-ashi, as far as I understand, gives more control over the opponent’s hip and therefore the knee line. One should be at a 90-degree angle entering the cross-ashi to get as deep of a knee line as possible.

Sitting at a 90-degree angle from our opponent, being able to dig for an underhook, we dug our outer hand under the knee of our opponent to grab onto the second popliteal (knee) tendon, while maintaining control over the foot with our inner arm’s tricep. When our opponent tried to make his escape, our tendon grip kept the knee in place while exposing the heel, letting us catch it with our wrist, locking it up with a wrist-to-wrist grip and finishing.

We worked on a couple variations of this, which were all very cool, like blocking the opponent’s ability to make base or catching the heel mid-roll from double-trouble. I feel like getting used to the cross-ashi position, using the popliteal tendon to adjust the kneeline, catching the heel mid-roll and using wrist-to-wrist and hip pressure to finish, were my most valuable lessons of the day.

All in all a great session. A big thanks to coaches @luukaaronbjj and @b_vanduin for organizing this beautiful day, to the incredibly talented and knowledgeable @jonahobjj for his help with the material, my training partner @michels_max or being an absolute delight to figure this leglocking stuff out with and ofcourse everybody involved for the amazing rolls at the open mat!

After the gym, we went to explore Amersfoort a little and found an incredibly beautiful city. Loads of café’s and restaurants(with the smallest grilled cheese’s I’ve ever seen), really nice people and amazing historical architecture and very well-kept parks and nature.

Shoutout to @simonekaren and @jessicagroos3 for being generally awesome. @gfajiujitsu

And I can’t separate, war from beauty.

Last Friday, our team had a promotion event, which I found incredibly moving. We got a chance to get together and celebrate the hard work our teammates have put in over the years. And even though each promote has had a radically different journey towards the next stage of their development, they all share determination, grit and a deep appreciation for our sport. Recognizing and celebrating this, makes me a very proud and grateful team member.

Our head coach had the chance to promote his first Blackbelt, John. And even tough I don’t see John that often, every time we talk, I feel like I’ve known him my entire life. I still remember the first time we did wrestling fundamentals and I got paired up with John. It felt like fighting an animated statue and it was incredible. The speed, agility and strength of his movement just inspired the hell out of me and showed me what is possible. And my appreciation for wrestling was born! Very glad I got to show my appreciation in the shark tank 😊

I got to reflect on my own game a little bit and I don’t feel like I deserve a blue belt yet. This has inspired me to round out my game because I know there are some fatal flaws in there. I have spent my first 1.5 years as a white belt figuring out what I like, basic movement and basic principles. Now It’s time to use those lessons in situations I don’t like and round out the parts of my game that I am somewhat avoiding. I am looking forward to growth!

This past weekend I had the opportunity to compete at @kaizen_league and I went home with a win and a loss, leaving me with mixed feelings, for several reasons.

The first being that, even though I won my match against @daniel__sousa79 , I lost a submission attempt in the first minute and got taken down, reminding me that my takedown defense wasn’t as iron-clad as I had believed it to be. Thankfully I have more defenses and I thrive in a scramble, so when the opportunity prevented itself again, I pulled the trigger with zero hesitation. It was a tough fight and I would love to do it again!

During the second match against @vincent_webb00, I faced a couple challenges. First off, Internally I found it hard to keep focus, which made my gameplan a little blurry. When I got taken down, it frustrated me. That frustration further clouded my focus and it took me a minute of spazzing under his side control to regain focus. When I heard that there was just one minute left, I found the energy to go back on the offence. Too little too late and to my dissatisfaction, I didn’t score a single point. Very much looking forward to our rematch!

All-in-all, I am very proud, thankful and happy that I got to compete again. Combining regular life with competition is hard, but it is possible. This event inspired me to continue to hone my competition game and that adds a great portion of meaning to my BJJ training.

A great big thanks to all the people that shared the space that day, I am very thankful to have been a part of this beautiful day!

A lotta love to everyone @gfajiujitsu , onto the next campaign💪❤️🔥 by @ideedejager

CHAUHT UP IN WRESTLING COUNTRY and loving every minute of it!

This last weekend I got to immerse myself in the wonderfully dynamic world of wrestling. Our team @gfajiujitsu got the incredibly talented Dennis Schindler of @corefightingsystem to teach a three day camp where where we first got to learn all about defencive head- and hand position. My favorite thing is definitly head pummeling but I learned a lot about thumb blocking. I cracked my thumb a couple times when I started out BJJ and got really scared of actively applying it. I learned that it had to do with pressure and control. Just keeping enough pressure on your hands and consciously using your grips, definitely feels less risky.

On the second day we got into more offensive technique, elbow passes, arm drags and duck-unders! I can definitively say that duck-unders look way easier then they are! (As is a lot of wrestling) But they are also even more fun when you make little quacking noises, which I really enjoy doing.

The third day we got to string it all together and got into collar ties! First we learned four ways of getting rid of the collar tie, circling inward, elbow under and two more that I definitely have to practice a lot more!

All in all, great weekend, great material and a whoooole lot of fun! Again, great thanks to Dennis and his Uke’s (who's names really slipped my mind but were really great!! Edit; found out a name! @alex.vernon1 , thankyou so much my man, it was all beautiful!)  And everyone from @corefightingsystem that joined in for the weekend!

ROBBING BANKS and taking home golden expierience on @versus.championship

First a great big thankyou to the People of @versus.championship for a great day, the people I met were very passionate, encouraging and helpful!

For my second competition I got to compete in 3 matches, wherein I had 1 win. And what a win it was! I faced the formidabele @bill.heirwegh who went in hard and heavy. I loved the energy and happely matched his pace, after some grip fighting I finally got an underhook and went in for the uchi mata, but couldn't get the hip position. Alas, I got the body lock, was able to throw a hook in and run around the corner while taking him down. I Secured the mount, started to work for the arm triangle but Bill defended that very hard. When he started to bridge I was able to throw hooks in and take the back, immediatly sinking the choke in. Gradually builing up pressure, following the breath of my opponent, I secured the submission. We both went in hard and I couldn't be more thankful to have had Bill as an opponent.

I had the honour to roll with our champion of the day, @davidvannedervelde who went in with a great game. He took some time to wear me down, putting on heavy collar ties and being exquisit with the gripfighting. I couldn't get trough and when I got frustrated and did some dumb gripping, we both got a stalling call. I got a little nervous and went on to work even harder, which gave David an oppertunity to grab a leg. When he lifted that badboy, I couldn't push him off and he put me down. His form was absolutely rock-solid and I couldn't get a hook in. After a buttery smooth hipbump-slide to side-controle he put the pressure on my face and worked the grips until he had wrist controle. Then, the smoothest armbar transition I could imagine and he locked in, gradually building up pressure, giving me enough time to tap... and nothing else! Hats off, it was an amazing show of jiu jitsu and I am also very thankful to have had David as an opponent.

But what I am most thankful for, are the beautiful people I share this crazy jiu jitsu Journey with and the memories we make along the way. Love you guys.💪❤️🔥

CHANNELING the energy of peace and prosperity through combat training and waging war. Going into my second comeptition, I am reflecting on the tranquility I experienced after my first. The dedication to the beauty of this martial art has made me... flourish!

ZERO PRESSURE, I am not trying, I am not wanting and there is no external forces driving me to this. I am accepting that this is me. I am a competitor, I am unrelenting and above-all I am thankful to the powers that be, for showing me the way.

PATIENCE, I am here for a long time, not a good time. Ofcourse, most time on the mat is good time, but that is not the goal of this enterprise for me. I want to know how deep this rabbit hole goes. I want the highs and I want the lows. For every experience on the mat, reveals more. And I just can't get enough.

I want to thank everyone at the team of @gfajiujitsu for helping me sharpen my game and for all their love and support, I couldn't imagine any of this without you guys. I will do everything in my power to make you all proud! OSS💪❤️🔥 by @ideedejager
