Blind embossing paired with duplexing is a premium, high-end print technique used to create luxurious, tactile, and minimalist designs.

Blind embossing creates a raised, three-dimensional image without ink or foil, while duplexing involves adhering two sheets of paper together to create a thicker stock. When combined, the duplexing masks the often-unsightly reverse indentation caused by the embossing, allowing for a clean, raised design on the face, and a perfectly smooth on the reverse.

Whilst drying the duplexed sheets are held under weight to prevent any bowing or warping (the glue used in duplexing can introduce moisture, causing the paper to warp or curl) and when trimming to size the guillotine clamps the job in position, unfortunately both operations result in flattening the blind embossing.

Often when using print-finishing processes in combination this can create their own unique issues, but when it comes to blind embossing paired with duplexing we have developed a solution to eliminate these issues, however, that’s our trade secret.

Microstructure foiling dies, also known as textured or micro-embossing dies, are specialised tools used in hot foil stamping and embossing to create intricate patterns and textures on materials.

Add depth, light, movement, or security features to your designs by incorporating textured patterns into your foiling dies.

These fine intricate textured patterns that are etched onto the die's surface, include various effects such as brushed metal, cross hatching, light rays, concentric circles and colt skin to name just a few. The patterns can be used individually or in composite (4x as per this example) in small or larger areas, within a single foiling die.

When used with metallic, pigment or holographic foils, or in combination with embossing, it adds real impact, definition, and tactility to your designs/images.

Microstructure Foiling Dies

Hard as Horse Hair, Soft as Feathers.

A study in tactility, material and quiet detail.

Outside, a blind deboss to the front and back cover and black foil detail on the spine. Inside, Munken Lynx Smooth, translucent Cromatico inserts and richly marbled endpapers create a layered, tactile experience.

Folded, gathered and section sewn, each element has been considered for the way it feels, moves and reveals itself.

A book made not simply to be read, but to be held.

A beautifully crafted layflat brochure.

Digitally printed in four-colour on Pergraphica Classic Smooth 150gsm, with a luxurious Sirio Ultra Black 370gsm cover, finished with one-colour foil and precision creasing.

The layflat format is central to the concept, allowing two separate brochures to flow seamlessly into one another as it is opened and explored. The considered construction makes the transition between each section feel natural and fluid, which is a testament to our craftsmanship of both our print and finishing departments.

A series of exhibition catalogues produced for Thomas Dane Gallery, designed to reflect the unique identity of each exhibition while maintaining a consistent and refined format.

Careful consideration was given to both material selection and production method, with each catalogue tailored to suit the featured exhibition. Depending on the required print run, editions were produced using either digital or lithographic printing, ensuring the most appropriate and efficient manufacturing process for each title. Despite the variation in print method, colour accuracy and image reproduction remained consistently high throughout, faithfully capturing the detail and nuance of the original artworks. Combined with premium paper stocks and foil-blocked covers, the result is a collection of publications that feel as thoughtfully crafted as the exhibitions they accompany.

Ever thought about varying your page widths?

Short-pages are a game-changer for both practical page layout and creative storytelling.

Take this beautiful art book (Cynthia Hawkins, Maps Necessary for a Walk in 4D, Chapter 4) for example: It uses a stepped layout to create a unique, tactile reading experience. You can also use this technique for cost-effective cascading Tab Indexing (Tab Cutting) in brochures or manuals.

The Print Rule: Whether you are choosing saddle-stitching, PUR, or perfect binding, all pages just need to share the same spine length. From there, you can vary the unbound width by trimming the text pages before they are bound into the cover.

MULTI-LEVEL DIE

This technique is all about pressure. Paper is transformed using a multi-level die to create depth, texture + dimension without ink.

Created to celebrate GMUND Cotton, we used blind embossing to produce a to-scale replica of a hand-held micrometer.

Height + contour were shaped by the bespoke multi-level brass die, which was carefully engineered to bring every single micro detail to life.

This luxury presentation box was produced for @strutherswatchmakers combining the rich texture of Colorplan Claret Morocco with elegant Foilco 3027 detailing. The mounted and wrapped construction over 3mm board provides exceptional rigidity and durability, while the foil blocking adds a refined finishing touch befitting a handcrafted timepiece.

The result is a sophisticated packaging solution designed to enhance the unboxing experience and reflect the craftsmanship of the product within.

Craft Industry Book

This beautifully produced casebound book was designed to celebrate craftsmanship in every detail. Measuring 250mm x 210mm, the publication combines premium materials, thoughtful finishing and exceptional print quality to create a truly tactile reading experience.

Printed on @antalisuk Pergraphica Natural Smooth 150gsm throughout, the 108-page text section features Indigo 4-colour process printing with a double-hit black, adding remarkable depth and contrast to the striking black-and-white photography. This additional layer of black ink creates richer shadows, sharper detail and a more impactful visual presence on the page.

The cover is produced on @gfsmithpapers Colorplan Adriatic 135gsm and features a debossed A6 area with a tipped-on image, creating an immediate point of interest and adding a handcrafted feel to the finished piece.
