First two naturally dyed color offerings. I was tired of blacks and khakis in workwear but still wanted to give some neutrals options. I think of this as an off-black iron dyed logwood which is so hard to tell if it’s dark purple, dark blue or faded black and an earth orange/rust dyed with madder root. All sourced in EU. Not super loud in my opinion but still something not available anywhere else! Dyed by hand, washed and fixed, the color will fade but only slightly, best to wash only when necessary, with ph neutral soap, and take care not to get citrus on it. I know it’s a lot but if you care about the environment you have to think about the fashion garment industry as well as being very energy intensive, trendy and the fabric and dyes are a massive pollutant. Buying these pants is definitely not saving the planet, it’s not even sustainable. But since we need to buy clothes anyway we can support new brands like me that are trying to make clothes in a better way, and honestly I don’t see how to do it any more “sustainable” than this. Other than growing and weaving my own fabric and dyes, baby steps… by @idlehoursco

Scenes from this past weekend naturally dyeing the pants. It’s quite a process, and this set up is definitely DIY, but had some friends, a fire and some tea breaks. I went with natural dye for the fabric because Of the traditional dyeing process and not being able to trace who is really working responsibly, there are definitely some but you can’t get many colors for the quantity of fabric I was buying! I enjoy this a lot but it is incredibly labor intensive and probably not feasible for every garment… we’ll see what happens now. Up on the website 🔜, but not quite ready…. by @idlehoursco

Batch No.1 of the Idle Pants is almost ready to order. These are the natural pant with double knee and plenty of pockets for trinkets or haberdashery, soft with Tencel and strong with hemp. More colors and info to come! by @idlehoursco

Natural dye testing on the fabric for the first run of pants, some cross contamination for sure but otherwise happy with the results. It’s a lot like baking or growing mushrooms, a little precision, measuring and order goes a long way. A very fun process I am happy to say.

Charcoal made from offcuts from the bed and chainsaw workshop using the kontiki method developed by Ithaka Institute and dug in the Albert Bates style…will be purifying water, making biochar, and using to blacksmith🤙 by @idlehoursco

Wood is an incredible material, and completely regenerative. Sustainably harvested wood has been regulated and controlled since the 70s. Meaning in places like Switzerland, Norway, Austria, no more wood is taken out of forest than is regenerated each year. That doesn’t mean all wood is sustainable in Switzerland! The majority of wood comes from elsewhere, make sure to buy FSC. Definitely try to buy Swiss. There is a lot more to say about this. Like these photos showing that even maintained wood farming in this way, it is still very mono-culture, not wilderness, not very bio-diverse, not very good loam soil, or diverse mycelium webs. still, I am grateful to live in a place that controls forestry, but a long way to go to be a true agroforestry practice. by @idlehoursco
