I've been working on these light displays at @plusxspace these past few weeks, mainly as a way to get to grips with 3dprinting and laser cutting.

A couple of people asked me to build them based on an earlier, and much less refined prototype.

This video shows two, nine cell light displays joined together, just before they go to their new owners.

I'm pretty pleased with them, and very grateful for the support of @yeah_laser in Brighton who have helped me source materials and ideas.

I really enjoy that the end of this lightbox overhangs the table it's on.

This sketch was inspired by a reel I saw by @chirpy_chehak who used a simple ultrasonic sensor to control a dither effect on a live video feed. I thought it would be interesting to try it on the split-flap video effect I've been toying with.

The first half uses the distance data to change effect parameters, and the effect is being applied to a prerecorded video clip.

The second half is more akin to the original inspiration, with the effect applied to a live video input.

Hung the hexagons on a wall in the living room and played about with a few effects in the dark.

I've recently been printing the hexagons with a back on. However, I think leaving them open so the colour of the wall comes through is interesting.

What do you think?

Fun weekend project on the bench: an LED display made from 3D printed parts (printed in @plusxspace 's workshop). LEDs driven by an esp8266 using WLED.
