Michelle and I can’t wait for you to visit the Obama Presidential Center!

Starting on June 19, the Center will be open to the public, and you’ll be able to check out the Museum along with public spaces like a new branch of the Chicago Public Library with a reading room, a two-acre playground, a fruit and vegetable garden, and more.

I caught up with @hardcopy_magazine to discuss the upcoming project with @obamafoundation Portrait by the amazing @marianovivanco

‘ Philosophical and theological texts have been a recurring focus of Khan’s work and now, at the request of the Obama Presidential Center, the artist turns his attention to one of President Obama’s most famous speeches.

Colloquially known as the ‘Selma’ speech, ‘Remarks by the President at the 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Marches’ serves as the textual inspiration for Khan’s ‘Sky of Hope’. Thousands of hand-stamped words from the speech, pouring from the apex of the room’s ceiling, will ask the viewer to contemplate the state of democracy and their role in it. ‘

Next week I head to Chicago to begin the install of my commission at the @obamafoundation - So I thought I’d better practice being up high and painting onto the same surface in the studio! … although when I am there I will be at 11m ! 😬 Can’t wait to get started on this special moment that has been 5 years in the making 💙

The commissioned work is to be a wall drawing entitled Sky of Hope, an immersive, site-specific painting consisting of thousands of hand-stamped words radiating from the apex of the ceiling to create a contemplative environment that invites reflection.

In the studio - Full Film - @artbasel Qatar - Time Present, Time Past comprises a series of panels painted in jewel-like hues embellished with gold leaf. Through many years of study, Khan has developed his exploration of colour to evoke both emotional immediacy and contemplative stillness by building layers of pigment. The colour acts as a psychological and spatial field — expansive, immersive, and affecting.⁣
