Meet Alyssa! ✨ After two years as an undecided student, she discovered UNA's undergraduate IDS program - and everything changed.

She stated, "Through this unique course of study, I've been able to learn a wide variety of subjects that suit my interests, gain confidence in my course of study, and make connections that I would have never made otherwise. I am very grateful that I found a course of action that is right for me."

Alyssa has proven herself to be an excellent student and has taken on several leadership roles throughout her undergraduate education. She's currently on track to graduate next year with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with an Emphasis in Arts, an Emphasis in Humanities, a Level II Certificate in Graphic Design, a Minor in Black Studies, and is also incorporating graduate-level work through our Accelerated Masters Program. That'll help fill a resume for sure!

Today, we'd like to introduce you to Holly, a current Master of Professional Studies (MPrS) student!

"Hi! My name is Holly Dunn, and I am currently pursuing the MPrS degree with an emphasis in Higher Education Administration at UNA. This program at UNA was a natural next step in my career because it combines my passion for higher education with opportunities to grow as a leader. Having spent nearly two decades at Calhoun Community College in roles ranging from Admissions/Records to Academic Advising and now Degree Works/Curriculum Coordinator, I've gained a deep appreciation for the impact colleges have on students, families, and communities. Every role has strengthened my commitment to helping students navigate their educational journeys and supporting the systems that contribute to their success. The MPrS program has expanded my understanding of higher education leadership, organizational effectiveness, and data-driven decision-making while allowing me to connect classroom learning to real-world challenges. As I look to the future, I plan to continue serving in higher education by applying the knowledge and leadership skills I've gained to improve processes, support student achievement, and contribute to the continued success of our students. This degree is helping prepare me to take on new leadership opportunities while continuing to make a meaningful difference in the community college system."

Holly has done an amazing job in our program and we are so grateful that we get to work with her. Her efforts each day are moving her closer to her goals. We are wishing her continued success!

There's a new Doctor in town! Some of you may remember Lexi, who completed her BS in Interdisciplinary Studies with an Emphasis in Health and a minor in Biology not too long ago in 2024. She went on to pursue graduate studies at South College-Knoxville and completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy this year! She will begin her role as a Physical Therapist at Results Physiotherapy next month with plans to pursue an orthopedic residency next year.

We are pleased to announce the recipient of our Summer 2026 IDS 450 Capstone Scholarship, Logan Smith!

In his capstone project, Logan plans to explore the ways growing reliance on technology-based learning impedes the development of foundational skills traditionally acquired in elementary education. The struggle to balance the benefits of technology with the negative effects of screen time on elementary-aged students will be analyzed, as well as the concerns about its impact on students' ability to develop foundational skills such as fine motor development, handwriting, and reading comprehension. By applying an interdisciplinary approach, Logan stated his goal is to determine "alternate ways to ensure students master these foundational skills, so they will have the basis they need for long-term academic success."

Logan is passionate about working with students and helping them reach their academic goals. He plans to continue his education at the graduate level and ultimately enter the field of education. Please help us congratulate Logan on his success thus far!
