“Hold me tight, please”I’ve been back to work for a while now, but thankfully it’s been really nice to be able to enjoy and extend the summer feeling these days. This weekend was really nice despite a bit of rain and dealing with my ear ache (which is almost over!).Yesterday as I was getting in bed I was reflecting a bit about how much this summer has changed from the last. Not also has my life changed to a great extend since then but also how I felt/feel inside. I remember feeling a bit insecure about myself and somewhat lonely at times. I guess that’s a bit common. “I will wait”This is both the name of the painting as well as the fact that I am waiting at the emergency room (nothing serious). But while I was waiting it made me think how much of a human experience it is to just “wait”.We wait in line at the store, we wait to come onboard, we wait for others, we wait for words, actions, feelings to bloom. In fact one could almost say that living is waiting (hear me out). When we are born our parents have been waiting for us around 9 months. Then we wait for our time ti start in school and we look forward to it. Soon enough we go onwards in our careers and we wait for our chance to start our first job on our field. And so goes life, always setting a new goal that we wait for, because either if it’s through waiting for our goals, money, or just waiting, time passes and we need to (you guessed it) wait.I am a quite impatient person. I would say that’s one of the least charming qualities that I have. Yet with years and some dedication I can muster waiting without letting my nerves eat me up. “The world at your feet”I’ve been enjoying being back to work after the summer holidays. Don’t get me wrong, I would have loved to have them last longer! But these last days it has been fun as well to see colleagues and get back into the work routine. I feel it also helps to get back to my painting routine on the nights that I am home. And I also feel that helps me improve (although not every day feels like it 😅🥲).As promised here’s the piece from Ugolino and His Sons. I took a picture of the painting and decided to “frame it” and sign it properly. Sculpture study 1: David’s handIt’s been a moment since I uploaded a sculpture study. I think that watercolors really help me translate the volume of a sculpture with their layers. Master study of J.C. Leyendecker pt.3For the third and last painting in this Leyendecker master study series, I worked from one of his portraits of a man in formal wear.This one felt like a good piece to end with because it has so many of the things I like and associate with Leyendecker: strong shapes, carefully placed shadows, expressive hands, and a face that feels stylized but still full of personality. Trying to translate all of that into Copic Ciao markers was challenging, especially with the contrast between the dark background and the warm light on the face. I think I never had worked so dark before with these markers, but I love how rich the black color can be!Through these three studies, I’ve learned a lot from slowing down and looking more closely at how Leyendecker built his images. Master study of J.C. Leyendecker pt.2For this second Leyendecker study, I worked from his poster Couple in Formal Wear, focusing only on the woman this time.I wanted to continue exploring his sense of elegance and design, especially the way he builds a figure through strong shapes, sharp contrasts and very intentional edges. Translating that into Copic Ciao markers was again a challenge, but also a really useful exercise in simplifying forms without losing the feeling of the original.Leyendecker’s place in illustration history is fascinating, not only because of the visual language he helped shape, but also because of the life behind the work. He is often remembered as a queer artist, and his long relationship with Charles Beach, who was also one of his most important models, adds another layer to the way we look at his images today.Since it’s June, it felt meaningful to spend time studying an artist whose work had such a lasting influence, including on Norman Rockwell, while also remembering the quieter parts of his story that were not always openly acknowledged in his own time.As always, there was a lot of trial and error, but that’s where I feel I learn the most.Swipe➡️for detail and process.Thanks for enjoying, liking and commenting!#jcleyendecker #masterstudy #illustrationstudy #copic #portrait by @ietes

Master study of J.C. Leyendecker pt.1I’ve been continuing with these studies of artists I admire, and this time I wanted to try something a little different by working with Copic Ciao markers.Leyendecker is such an interesting figure in illustration history. His work helped shape the visual language of early 20th-century American magazine covers, and he had a clear influence on Norman Rockwell, who I also admire. Trying to study Leyendecker with markers was both challenging and really interesting. His paintings have such confidence in the shapes, shadows and edges, and it made me slow down and pay more attention to how much can be said through deliberate simplification. Master study of John Singer Sargent pt. 3Despite this one being the least favorite of these three studies, it is the one that resembles the most the subject in the painting. I think part of me liking this one the least is due to some issues with the texture of the paper. Master study of John Singer Sargent pt.1I’ve been working on some studies of known artists, and I have to admit that through this process of trial and error, I have learned a lot both of the craft and the artist behind the inspiration. I got to admire some of the paintings of Sargent at our last visit at the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum in Madrid and I was awestruck by his strokes. «Taking myself on a date»Let it be known that I do love me some earthly pleasures, among them treating myself (and often) to good food. «Afternoon snack»I am a big fan of kaki/persimmon, but I am unsure if this is the usual variety. I used to have these when I was a kid in Spain, and I find them rarely in our usual store here in Oslo. They are always so sweet, but not juicy (which to me I feel it usually goes hand in hand with fruits).This painting was inspired by how delicious it looked in my hand when I brought it home from the store.
