With the generous support of the Embassy of Sweden, the Triple Resilience (3R) Program in Mozambique showed how Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) can strengthen both social and economic cohesion.

By pairing farmer associations and cooperatives with savings, credit, and digital tools, VSLAs created regular spaces to share knowledge, discuss community challenges, build stronger organizations, and open doors to markets.

The final evaluation also showed that:
๐Ÿ“ˆ Average savings per eight-month cycle grew from MZN 900 to approximately MZN 5,000
๐Ÿค 60% of associations bought agricultural inputs collectively through links with program-supported agro-dealers
๐ŸŒพ 72.7% of associations aggregated and marketed their production together, almost five times the original target

VSLAs proved to be far more than a way to access credit. They became platforms for cooperation, social inclusion, collective learning, and local economic development, helping build more organized and resilient communities.

"For every set of conditions, there is a best set of management options to sustain food security as best as possible โ€“ even under conditions of scarcity." โ€“ Luis Prochnow

What works in one field or region will not necessarily work in the next. One-size-fits-all nutrient use is an outdated practice that should be replaced by balanced fertilization, addressing deficiencies not only in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but also in secondary nutrients and micronutrients.

When nutrients are matched to local soils, crops, water conditions, and farmer realities, even limited inputs can deliver stronger harvests, better returns, and fewer losses.

How can farmers grow the food needed when fertilizer becomes harder to access?

The answer is not simply to use less, but to make every available nutrient work better.

Matching nutrients to local soils and crops, restoring soil health, and making proven solutions accessible can help farmers produce food under challenging conditions.

For this #WorldFoodDay, we're exploring this year's theme on what it takes to innovate today and nourish tomorrow!

On October 8โ€“9, the TRANSFORM Program brought together government institutions, researchers, universities, private-sector actors and development partners in Adama, Ethiopia, for the National Consultative Workshop on New and Emerging Soil Input Technologies.

The goal was to build a shared understanding of where research, production and commercialization of innovative soil fertility technologies stand, and open the door for private sector engagement in producing and distributing them.

1๏ธโƒฃ Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology, which turns organic waste into poultry feed ingredients and frass fertilizer. Participants visited the BSF production facility of Bio Emerging Technology Institute (BET) in Adama to see the process and its commercial potential first-hand.

2๏ธโƒฃ Wollo University showcased its work on BSF production systems, quality assurance and commercialization.

3๏ธโƒฃ Biochar, bone char, biostimulants, and biological soil amendments were also on the agenda, with private companies sharing their experiences and displaying their products, including innovative biofertilizers and granulated compost.

Kasahun Adelo, Director of TRANSFORM, noted that the program is improving soil fertility and soil health for 100,000 farmers across Amhara, Oromia and Central Ethiopia, while also supporting youth in vermicompost and compost production from production through to market linkage.

Sileshi Ainekulu, a Soil Fertility and Health Expert at the Ministry of Agriculture, shared that the ministry is working on acidic, saline and black soils, and that the workshop helped to strengthen and sustain efforts to expand organic fertilizers and integrated soil fertility management.

Scaling these innovations will need stronger research partnerships, quality assurance, access to finance, greater farmer awareness and supportive regulatory systems.

Women made up 65% of the Triple Resilience (3R) programโ€™s beneficiaries, and the results show what inclusion can achieve.

By building a gender-sensitive approach into every intervention, and tailoring training to different literacy levels, 3R opened real doors for women:

๐Ÿ“ˆ Womenโ€™s participation in community decision-making rose from 54.2% to 90.6%, a 36.4 percentage point increase
๐Ÿ“ˆ Women able to influence agricultural decisions, from crop selection to input investment, pricing, market choice, and household income management, rose from 44.3% to 59.4%, a 15.1 percentage point increase

What made the difference? We first identified the barriers women face, then designed solutions around their needs. Technical and business training, paired with start-up support for small businesses that the women designed themselves, proved to be among the most transformative interventions for income and economic autonomy.

Thank you to the Embassy of Sweden for its generous support, which made this progress possible.

The Triple Resilience (3R) Program reached more than 18,000 farmers across 12 districts in the provinces of Sofala and Manica. After three years of implementation, the final evaluation demonstrated that investing in Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) generates tangible and lasting impact in rural communities in Mozambique.

The results speak for themselves:

โœ… 84.7% of beneficiaries interviewed demonstrated knowledge of Climate-Smart Agriculture and Sustainable Natural Resource Management practices
โœ… 67.2% adopted at least three recommended practices
โœ… 82.6% reported a reduction in climate-related agricultural losses
โœ… 77.2% reported increased productivity on their farms
โœ… 11% overall increase in agricultural income, even in a context marked by droughts, floods, cyclones, and irrigation constraints

By combining practical training, demonstration plots, and continuous technical assistance, the 3R Program strengthened farmersโ€™ capacity to cope with increasingly frequent climate shocks and build more resilient production systems.

We thank the Embassy of Sweden in Mozambique for its generous support to the Triple Resilience (3R) Program.

A quote from Dr. Andreฬ Bationo: "Sixty percent of soils in Africa are degraded. It is urgent to adopt scientific technologies to restore productivity."

In our latest article, Dr. Bationo and other authors explain that healthy soils are the foundation of farm productivity, profitability, and resilient food systems. Farmers cannot sustainably increase production where soils are depleted, lack organic matter, retain little water, or cannot make applied nutrients available to crops.

Their paper highlights the importance of finding solutions that can maximize nutrient sources for better yields while improving soil health over time.

Happy Global Fertilizer Day!

A recent research paper entitled โ€œLessons from low- and middle-income countries to improve nutrient-use efficiency under fertilizer scarcityโ€ offers a timely response to the challenges farmers face as they work to produce more food on more degraded land, even as access to fertilizer and other essential inputs grows less reliable and more expensive.

Read the article and thought piece to explore why fertilizer scarcity does not have to result in yield collapse โ€“ link in bio.
