Reaching this place is an adventure in itself. 🌿

Vijaynagar, in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district, is surrounded by dense forests and reached by a long, rugged road.

The road has only recently made its way here and every kilometre of the journey had me asking:

Was it worth it?

This is just the beginning of my Vijaynagar story. 🏞️

Some places don’t just show you a different landscape, they show you a completely different way of life.

Deep in the Barmer region of Rajasthan, beyond the endless sand dunes, life exists in one of the harshest environments I’ve travelled through.

Water is scarce, summers are unforgiving, settlements are scattered, and even the simplest necessities can come with effort.

And yet, people have built lives here, adapting to the desert, depending on limited freshwater sources, preserving traditions, and making the most of what this land offers.

Travelling through places like these always resets my perspective.

Things we consider basic conveniences elsewhere can be precious resources here.

Sometimes, exploring a place is less about what you see and more about how differently you start seeing your own life afterwards.

A railway line that once connected people across a border… and then became a witness to war. 🚂🇮🇳

Travelling through Barmer on the route of the Thar Express, I reached Gadra Road — a small railway station with a history much bigger than its size.

Before 1965, trains travelled through this desert corridor towards Sindh. But during the India–Pakistan War of 1965, this railway line became part of the battlefield. Pakistani forces advanced into this sector and Munabao, India’s last railway station on this route, also came under attack. Railway infrastructure around Gadra Road and Munabao witnessed intense military action, and rail connectivity across the border was eventually broken.

What makes Gadra even more fascinating is the geography created by Partition.

The old settlement associated with Gadra was divided by the international boundary, with the larger historic settlement falling on the Pakistani side, while Gadra Road railway station remained on the Indian side in Barmer district.

Imagine that — a railway station left on one side of a border, while the place whose name it carries lies across another country.

For more than four decades after the 1965 war, trains stopped crossing this route. Then, on 18 February 2006, the India–Pakistan rail link through Munabao–Khokhrapar was revived as the Thar Express, reconnecting families separated by Partition and decades of closed borders.

Today, when you travel through this landscape, it doesn’t feel like just another railway journey.

Every station, abandoned track and stretch of desert carries stories of Partition, war, migration, divided families and borders that changed overnight.

Sometimes, understanding a border starts with following an old railway line.

There was once a train that crossed this desert… all the way to Pakistan. 🚂🇮🇳🇵🇰

The Thar Express connected India and Pakistan through Rajasthan, carrying not just passengers, but families, memories and stories across one of the most sensitive borders in the world.

I went exploring what remains of that route today, the stations, the tracks, the border landscape and the stories of a train that once made this journey possible.

For me, places like these are fascinating because borders are never just lines on maps. They are lived experiences.

It was an afternoon of joy, learning and conversations with the women of Barmer, who practise the traditional craft of Turpai and Tigai every day.

What may look like simple handwork carries much more within it skill passed down through generations, hours of patience, and an important source of livelihood.

Between managing their homes, children and everyday responsibilities, these women sit together, work with remarkable speed and precision, and complete orders that eventually reach some of the biggest brands.

For them, this craft is not just about stitching fabric.

It is about contributing to the household, earning independently, preserving a local skill, and keeping a tradition alive, one stitch at a time.
