🤔 What questions are you asking your city council candidates?

I voted for @dianachanmcnally in Ward 4 Parkdale - High Park and here’s one reason why.

Compare your candidates at:
WardWatch.ca
VoteToronto.com

Thanks to @ijvtorontoyorkbds for this:
IJV BDS Toronto & York Region, @ifnotnowtoronto, @worldbeyondwarcanada, The Canadian Arab Federation (CAF), @scan_toronto, Palestine Network - Shining Waters (PalNet SW), Jews for Tikkun Olam (J4TO), @torontocentre4palestine, the Jewish Faculty Network UofT, @winchevsky, @torontopalestinianfamilies,
@parkdalehighparkforpalestine, @justpeaceadvocates, @etobicokesouthforpalestine, @surj_toronto, @davenport4palestine, @ontariopalestinianra and @canadabdscoalition have joined forces to create Toronto’s Coalition for Ethical Investment & Procurement (CEIP).

CEIP’s aim can be stated simply: we demand that the City of Toronto end all business dealings with corporations that are linked to severe human rights abuses, such as genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, illegal military occupation, mass surveillance and mass incarceration. Ending the City’s business dealings means no more investments of public funds, and no more purchases of goods and services from human rights abusers.

With your help, we’ll be working to make ethical investment and procurement an issue in the upcoming municipal elections.

Visit the links in our bio to read CEIP’s proposed policy statement and an email template you can use to contact candidates.

As we enter the Jewish New Year, 5787, we welcome all parts of ourselves into this sacred time: our grief, our rage, our hope, our despair, and our longing for a different world.

The Days of Awe invite us into reflection, realignment, recommitment and repair. T’shuvah asks us to turn, return, and transform, to look honestly at where we have caused harm, remained silent, become numb, or missed the mark.

We enter this year amid Israel’s ongoing genocide and occupation of the Palestinian people, and profound violence, dehumanization and injustice around the world. Our traditions call us not to turn away, but to ask what accountability, justice and action require of us.

For those of us working in caring and healing professions, these questions also enter the spaces where we work. We are called to stay curious about how our identities, histories and experiences shape how we listen, whose pain we recognize, what we make space for, and what we may have difficulty seeing clearly within and around us.

Our liberation, safety and dignity are bound together.

As we gather in community for these upcoming High Holidays, may our collective reflection, song, prayer, protest and actions carry us and all humanity into love, justice and collective liberation.

At a time when every day brings new horrors in Gaza and the West Bank due to the boundless brutality of the Israeli state, when Palestinians are being murdered daily, the University of Toronto plans to host...a Zionism conference.

“A Canary’s Song” will present those who oppose genocide, occupation and apartheid as “the contemporary face of Jew-hatred.”

Speakers include an expansive list of genocide-deniers, who will be welcomed by Melanie Woodin, President of the University of Toronto.

U of T’s website promises incoming students “a caring, inclusive community that nurtures every newcomer.” Caring and inclusive—UNLESS you’re Palestinian, Lebanese, care about human rights or oppose genocide.

To call anti-Zionism racist is absurd when it is Zionism that is based on the idea of racial superiority.

The Israeli state uses explicitly racist laws to justify and uphold settler colonialism, ethnic cleansing and the genocide of Palestinian people.

We urge the University of Toronto to cancel the conference. U of T must refuse to host “thinkers” who deny the daily slaughter of Palestinians and demonize those who advocate for Palestinian dignity, freedom and rights.

As Jewish communities enter the Jewish New Year and High Holiday season, progressive Jewish organizations in Toronto are coming together around community, culture, reflection and collective action, with a focus on Palestinian human rights and the ongoing genocide in Gaza being carried out in our name.

This year’s gatherings bring together both long-standing and emerging progressive Jewish communities in Toronto, including the United Jewish People’s Order (UJPO), which is celebrating 100 years of progressive Jewish culture, community and social justice organizing; D’ror Yikra, a new Jewish, anti-Zionist, collective liberationist community in Toronto; and Jews for Tikkun Olam (J4TO), a Toronto-based community of social workers, therapists, spiritual leaders and educators committed to social justice, solidarity and collective action.

IfNotNow is also supporting these High Holiday gatherings, connecting local organizing in Toronto to a broader movement of Jews challenging Zionism and organizing for Palestinian freedom, equality and self-determination, and for a future in which Palestinians and Jews can live with dignity, freedom and safety.

Together, these communities represent both a long history of Jewish social justice organizing and the emergence of new Jewish spaces for people seeking community, cultural connection, political organizing and collective life grounded in justice, solidarity and liberation.

Join us!

Kites encouraged!

We are relieved to learn that @mayoroliviachow will not be participating in the “debate” on antisemitism planned for Sept. 8 in Toronto.

No one who is seeking to become mayor of a city should participate in events organized and moderated by people who perpetuate hate and misinformation against identifiable communities, such as this discussion to be moderated by Canadaland Editor and Publisher Jesse Brown.

Jesse Brown has a publicly documented history of propagating Islamophobic rhetoric, and has repeatedly and baselessly smeared the anti-genocide, pro-Palestine movement as being antisemitic.

As Jews who stand in solidarity with Palestinians for collective liberation, we know that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

The rising threat of antisemitism is an issue of deep concern for Jewish communities across Canada, as we know it is for most Canadians. Nonetheless, it is critical that we refuse to allow the terms of how it’s discussed be set by organizations and individuals who have a greater interest in protecting the state of Israel than in protecting Jewish Canadians.

We’ve seen time and time again how Jesse Brown and others claiming to speak on behalf of Jewish Canadians have refused to distinguish anti-Zionism from antisemitism. If it’s antisemitic to conflate Jews in general with the state of Israel, why then would we accept a debate on antisemitism moderated by those who constantly make that conflation?

While there have been several high-profile incidents targeting Jewish community members and institutions over the past few years, it is impossible to get a clear picture of antisemitism in Canada when peace marches and keffiyehs are reported as antisemitic.

Any discussion about antisemitism must also take place in a context that acknowledges and discusses the more systemic issues of anti-Palestinian racism, Islamophobia and other forms of structural oppression in Canada.

It must also grapple with the reality of Canada’s role materially supporting the genocidal Israeli state with an ongoing, two-way flow of weapons, other forms of trade, and unaltered diplomatic relations. taken in Toronto, Canada by @ifnotnowtoronto

We are proud to join the growing coalition standing with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and defending its curatorial independence.

Public museums must be able to present difficult and contested histories without political interference. Criticism and debate are legitimate, but politicians and pressure groups should not determine what exhibitions Canadians are permitted to encounter.

The statement remains open to additional organizations and individuals. We encourage others to join us.

The community of Umm al-Khair in the West Bank is calling for people around the world to host solidarity memorials to mark one year since the murder of Awdah Hathaleen who was shot dead by an Israeli settler on July 28th, 2025. Settler-state attacks have been unceasing in the year since, as the community endures escalating attempts to deny their children the right to education, cut their water supply, and demolish their homes.

We are answering the call in Toronto on July 28th. by @ifnotnowtoronto
