The EF5 Enderlin, North Dakota tornado 🤯🌪️

The Enderlin EF5 tornado was one of the most powerful tornadoes in recent history. It occurred on the night of June 20, 2025, in eastern North Dakota and became the first EF5 tornado in the United States in more than 12 years.
The tornado formed at around 11:04 PM and lasted only about 16 minutes, but during that short time it caused extreme destruction. It traveled about 12 miles (19 km) and reached a maximum width of more than 1 mile (about 1.6 km). Wind speeds were estimated to be over 210 mph (338 km/h), which qualifies it for the highest rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale.
The tornado destroyed several farmhouses, flattened trees, and left a path of severe damage through rural areas near Enderlin. Sadly, three people were killed, making it the deadliest tornado in North Dakota since 1978.
Because EF5 tornadoes are very rare, the Enderlin tornado is considered a historic event in modern tornado research and ended a long period without an EF5 in the United States.

I can't believe that this is almost 18 months ago we've chased the absolute kind of beauty! 🤩

Fortunately many many people were on this storm so all the current haters trying to put my name on a black list can relax and chill.

My nickname is moments of insanity, this is the real kind of thing which represents my nickname on Instagram as best!

In late June 2025, central North Dakota experienced a significant severe weather outbreak that produced multiple tornadoes and large hailstorms. On the evening of June 27, a series of supercell thunderstorms developed across the region, creating favorable conditions for tornado formation. Nine tornadoes were eventually confirmed across the state, including two that touched down just north of Bismarck, the capital city of North Dakota.

The first Bismarck tornado formed approximately eight miles north of the city at about 10:23 p.m. CDT. According to a National Weather Service damage survey, the tornado was rated EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with estimated peak winds of 95 miles per hour. The tornado remained on the ground for about four minutes and traveled roughly one-third of a mile. As it crossed a rural property, it caused significant damage to an outbuilding, overturned a covered trailer, and snapped or uprooted several trees before dissipating in an open field. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

A second tornado developed only a few minutes later, at approximately 10:29 p.m., about seven miles north of Bismarck. This tornado drifted slowly southwest across open countryside and remained visible for around five minutes. Because it did not strike any structures or leave measurable damage, meteorologists classified it as EFU (Enhanced Fujita Unknown), meaning its intensity could not be determined. Despite causing no damage, the tornado attracted considerable attention because it was highly visible and photographed by many observers in the area.

The tornadoes occurred as part of a larger severe weather event that produced very large hail across the Bismarck region, with some hailstones reaching baseball size.

On June 5, 2025, a powerful EF2 tornado struck near Morton, a small town in Cochran County, Texas. The tornado developed from a severe supercell thunderstorm that moved across the South Plains region during an outbreak of severe weather. It tracked from an area south of Maple to northeast of Morton, covering nearly 10 miles and reaching a maximum width of more than 1,700 yards. The tornado caused significant damage in rural areas, although no major population centers were directly affected. Several wooden power poles were snapped or severely damaged, and two large center-pivot irrigation systems were overturned by the intense winds. Meteorologists classified the tornado as an EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, indicating wind speeds between 111 and 135 miles per hour.

The tornado attracted considerable attention from storm chasers and researchers because of its large size and well-defined structure. Scientists from the National Severe Storms Laboratory observed the storm and collected valuable data. During the event, specialized equipment even recorded a hailstone being ejected from the tornado at extremely high speed, providing researchers with unique information about tornado dynamics. Despite the strength of the tornado, the damage was mainly limited to agricultural land and infrastructure, reducing the risk to human life.

🌪️ The Effingham, Illinois monster EF-3 on June 17th was an incredibly powerful tornado that completely destroyed around 30 homes was one of the most worrisome tornadoes I witnessed in 2026. Not only was it produced by an incredibly fast moving supercell, but it also displayed characteristic of an incredibly destructive tornado, leaving residents with little time to waste before getting to underground shelter. The fact that this intense tornado took no lives was an absolute miracle. Thanks in large part to fellow chasers providing live updates, many were already tuned in to the situation as it unfolded, likely saving numerous lives. I still remember going to sleep that night hoping and praying for the residents of Effingham and surrounding communities, expecting to hear of numerous casualties come morning. I certainly had quite the sigh of relief when I found out that no lives had been lost to this destructive monster.

Massive supercell in New Mexico 👀

May 2025

New Mexico experiences severe weather several times throughout the year, especially during the spring and summer months. Thunderstorms are common during the North American monsoon season, which usually lasts from July to September. These storms can bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail, and flash flooding. While many parts of the state are dry for much of the year, intense storms can develop quickly and cause significant damage.

Tornadoes also occur in New Mexico, although they are less frequent than in states located in the central Great Plains, such as Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. On average, New Mexico experiences around ten tornadoes each year. Most tornadoes are relatively weak, but stronger tornadoes can occasionally form and cause serious destruction. Tornadoes are most likely to occur between May and August, when atmospheric conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms.

The eastern part of New Mexico is particularly vulnerable to tornadoes because it is closer to the region known as “Tornado Alley.” Residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather forecasts and warnings during severe weather season. Although tornadoes are not as common as in some neighboring states, they remain an important natural hazard in New Mexico.

⏮️🌪️Throwback to my very first intense (EF-2+) tornado almost half a decade ago near Bergen, Alberta! This intense tornado yielded winds of 190 km/h and destroyed a very well constructed outbuilding and inflicted very intense damage to forests and vegetation with maximum width of well over half a kilometre (600 m). This was THE tornado that kickstarted my career as a chaser! Unfortunately there was a significant injury associated with this tornado but thankfully it avoided populous areas and caused zero fatalities!
