Playing around with that idea of a “trigger sound” changing the state of other music being played here in my collection of minis Trigger Studies for string quartet and percussion.

After meeting the incredibly fierce violinists last week at @youngarts, I had the impulse to write them (+ myself!) a mini musical roller coaster of fun. One day we found a tiny pocket of time to read through it, and HOLY 🎊🎶🎆!!! I am floored by the energy and musicality they brought to the piece. What a blast!! Thanks guys 😄🙏

The inner two movements of my piece “Recall”—which was premiered last week at the Norfolk (@norfolk.yale) New Music Workshop🎉—explore the idea of a musical sequence: small fragments of harmonies that move down or up with each repetition. I’m fascinated by how simple and beautiful these devices are, and interested in finding ways (both old and new) to incorporate them into my music.

One particular favorite of mine is a rather brief one that comes amidst a tempestuous passage in Brahms’ 2nd Piano concerto— some four chords orchestrated into dark, low, energetic piano writing I find to be really special and uniquely Brahms. An extraction & manipulation of the harmonic material from this bar eventually became the main material that appears throughout the 2 inner movements of “Recall”❗️ 📝 🔄

Thank you Norfolk!!!!! 🎶 @norfolk.yale

It was an honor to participate in the 2026 Norfolk New Music Workshop, a program that is part of one of oldest chamber music festivals in the US. My time at Norfolk was highly enriching, collaborative, and fruitful, thanks to the brilliant faculty, musicians, and peers I got to live and work alongside.

The grounds of the estate hold a breathtaking balance between stillness and natural vitality which was thought-provoking and inspiring in many ways.

I learned so much in the process of rehearsing/ workshopping and the premiere of my piece “Recall”-which was littered with a number of compositional experiments-and am so grateful to the NMW ensemble for their openness, dedication, and musicianship @vi_ciara_ously

academic-year-in-review 🤓📚🎶

Between my time in the @nyuscreenscoring and @nyyouthsymphony programs this year, I got to write a lot of fun stuff!! Thank you to every teacher, mentor, peer, and collaborator who encouraged and challenged my creativity, I am so grateful to have these spaces to learn and experiment. One more year to go @ nyu.. 👀

“Linear momentum” from alll the way back at the end of 2024 w/ @budapestscoring!!

This short piece was for an orchestration assignment & has some fun experiments in texture and extended technique. (at one point I called the latter section a “timbral soup” 😆)

Massive thanks & props to the orchestra!! And thanks also to my orchestration teachers at @nyuscreenscoring and to @musiversalorchestras for coordinating 🥳🎶

“BEETHOVEN X CHAPPELL ROAN” for the 2026 YA Classical concert!!! ♥️🎶🤘 (Beethoven unfortunately did not make it into this reel RIP but stay tuned for the full recording of the arrangement in the coming weeks)

The YA Classical finales are always incredibly special experiences as a result of the immense talent, artistry and respect that fills the room, but I think that they also make a profound case for a kind of classical performance that invites the audience to make noise, to partake in the music-making; a performance that creates space for joy to erupt through the concert hall in a breathtaking way. There is a lot more room for this in the Classical ecosystem that we should seek to fill, and can absolutely do so while still showing the tradition deep respect. I find it quite beautiful that classical technique and physicality can be applied so diversely—that spiccato and staccato and legato and pizzicato gestures can all add up to the songs of @chappellroan—and the tradition is only honored by exploring the ways in which it can connect to and interact with today’s popular culture. Many of us can be moved just as deeply by this performance as by some of the most cherished works in the canon, and presenting more performances like these has the power to mobilize the audiences missing from concert halls today, something essential to the longevity of this art form.
