Holy Roman emperor Otto III but I try to learn to render and also a comparison to how I drew him in 2024
The music title has very little to do with Otto but it sounds so jolly I had to choose this one

Holy Roman emperor Otto iii mourning saint Adalbert of Prague

Otto III was friends with Adalbert of Prague, bishop of Prague who faced so much hostility he had to flee to Rome where he met Otto.
For Otto tho he was a role model and close friend and counselor, probably influencing young Otto with his asceticism.
Adalbert, after an agreement with the pope, was allowed to stop being a bishop by becoming a missionary instead.
He went to Poland where Boleslaw the Brave, the current duke, told him "hey go christianize the Pruzzi (later prussians) nothing bad will happen."
Adalbert got killed but Boleslaw managed to ransom the body. When Otto went to Poland he was taken to see the cathedral of Gniezno, where Adalbert's body was buried. According to Thietmar of Merseburg he fell to his knees and wept bitterly for his friend.
What I get from studying Otto's reign is that he had extreme emotional reactions to everything and that showed through his reign, formed deep bonds and was stubborn in his decisions. His extreme piety (fasting as much as possible, wearing a hair shirt) his obsession with making rome "great again". After all otto didn't even make it to 22. He kinda makes me sad and I wanted to express it, thank you for coming to my tedxtalk

I have come to the conclusion that my art is a punishment I have to inflict to you.
The context is that Theodoric, now king of Italy, despite being Arian gained the trust of the pope, protecting both arian and non arian christian subjects. But meanwhile the emperor Justin I overseas started actively persecuting arians, making Theodoric force pope John I to go to Constantinoples to convince Justin to cancel his edicts of persecution. It didn't work. John wasn't known for his iron will.
So Theodoric imprisoned Pope John when he came back and started persecuting the non arian christian as a way to tell Justin to go fcuk off

Enjoy the furry rendition of these guys I even had to make characters design studies to get the look I wanted sigh

Hannibal started climbing the alps in late September 218BCE and got out in the first days of October. He had to encourage his soldiers (and very much needed 37 elephants) to do the crossing.

Here's a bit of what Hannibal told to his troups according to Livy:
"when even now the Alps are right before our eyes and Italy only just beyond; now, on the very doorsteps of our enemies, you want to stop – because you feel a little tired! 30.6. What on earth do you think the Alps are except a collection of high mountains? Perhaps you think they are even higher than the Pyrenees? So what? 30.7. Nothing on earth can ever reach the sky; no mountain is too high for man to conquer. People actually live in the Alps, for goodness’ sake! They till the ground; animals breed and grow fat there. If a small group of natives can cross them, so can an army. 30.8. Look at these delegates from the Boii – they didn’t grow wings and fly here over the top. Even their ancestors were not born here; they came here as immigrant peasants from Italy; they crossed these selfsame Alps in huge migrating hordes, with all their women and children – and lived to tell the tale. 30.9. What is so difficult then for an army, with nothing to carry but its own equipment? It can go anywhere and cross anything. Think of what it cost us to capture Saguntum – eight months of danger, eight months of hard slog. But we stuck it out. 30.10. And now it’s Rome that is our prize, the capital of the world; nothing, however difficult and dangerous it may be, nothing – surely! - can deter us from this glorious enterprise."

Belisarius if he was a song. I read about his life and felt so bad for him. I also read some letters empress Theodora sent him they were straight up psychological torture. Antonina did him dirty but Theodora did him dirtier. Justinian is there I guess.
Jokes aside I hope you like it.
That's the idea I had in mind for a couple of days I had to do it. This post was made possible by: Procopius minding everyone's business

The eunuch as an angel
But it's Basil Lekapenos
This is based on the similarities of the role of angels and eunuchs in byzantine society where both are seen as an extension of their ruler (god who speak through angels and the eunuchs who act on behalf on the emperor)
If fact sometimes the emperor himself spoke through eunuchs, not all people were allowed to listen to his voice. Others received objects (staffs, and other cerimonial object) by the hands of eunuchs and it counted as if they were given by the emoeror himself.
So this gets translated in iconography where angels appear beardless and with cerimonial clothes often worn by court eunuchs. To prove this notice the pearls who only the emperors and some specific ranks of eunuchs could wear.

My redraw of this cover from the Manga Ad Astra: Scipio and Hannibal. Here Hannibal is holding his brother Hasdrubral's head.
It was made by Mihachi Kagano and released in 2011 and was finished in 2018, basically it goes through the 2nd punic war starting from the birth of Hannibal Barca.
Hannibal is one of the protagonists and is depicted with the supernaturally intelligent dangerous villain trope with little human emotions. Scipio is the other protagonist and he fits the handsome and smart hero trope.
I still haven't finished the manga but personally I'm not a fan of all the design choices, but I love how into detail it goes. I accept the personality changes bc either way we don't know for sure how they acted like back than.

I got this comment a few days ago and I knew I had to draw it.
Yes it's a continuation post on that tierlist I made of the byzantine emperors if they smoked (if you're looking for it it's the slide after the hypergamy joke).
The more I keep typing the more I am met with the reality of what I do with my historical knowledge (a favor to humanity that's what I do)

only now I have realized I didn't make Justinian's eyes red. Oh well
