Tax Refund 101: Where does that money actually come from? 💸

Think of your tax refund as a "forced savings account" you didn't realize you had. Here’s the breakdown:

It’s your own money: A refund happens when you overpay your taxes throughout the year (usually via payroll withholding). You’re just getting your own money back, not a government bonus.

Why does the amount change? Your refund depends on your life situation—things like your income, tax credits (like the Child Tax Credit), and deductions. If your situation changes, your refund changes too.

When do you get it? You don’t get it throughout the year. You file your taxes after the year ends, and if you overpaid, you get the lump sum back early in the following year (usually Feb–April).

Bottom line: A big refund feels great, but it means you let the government hold onto your money interest-free all year!
