Working across archives, 3D renders, and centuries of Islamic manuscripts, a new generation of designers is reshaping what the Arab image can look like.

For our “Mosaic” issue, writer and artist Hadi Afif (@hadyafif) speaks to some of the practitioners leading that shift: Mina Maurice (@mina.mxrice) from Cairo-based studio 40Mustaqel (@40mustaqel), founded by Nada Hesham, which approaches design as a tool for cultural and political research rather than a service discipline. Palestinian artist Mohammed Tatour (@sikotatour), whose archival practice moves fluidly between Tumblr dashboards and Andalusian history. “They keep us without archives,” he says. “So we make sure there are archives.” Amman-based designer Hescham Alkarshan (@ihk.v), who returns again and again to the emotional and sacred life of the Arabic letter itself. And Mothanna Hussein (@mothannahussein) of @45turbo whose collaborations with calligrapher Hassan Kanaan push the Arabic script into sculpture, jewellery, and 3D form.
