Over the past three weeks, groups of third, fifth and sixth grade students from the Harvard Kent School visited the MGH Institute for field trips focused on practical health education. ABSN students led sessions on topics including swim safety, the importance of healthy sleep routines, and strategies for managing stress. The School of Nursing has collaborated with the local elementary school on this annual health fair since 2018, with only a brief pause during the COVID pandemic.

“The Harvard Kent students visit the IHP to participate in interactive health education stations designed by our nursing students,” explained Dr. Kathy Sabo, Director of the Ruth Sleeper Nursing Center for Clinical Education and Wellness. “At each station, participants explore simple, practical strategies to promote health and prevent illness, while also learning more about the role of nurses. For our students, the experience provides a chance to practice communicating essential health information in a short period of time. They must prioritize key points, tailor their messages for a younger audience, and present them in an engaging and accessible way. The event continues to receive very positive feedback.”

✨🎓 How do you sum up an academic journey in just a few words? I think many of our students thought about that last week as we celebrated commencement the day before Mother's Day. The School of Nursing celebrated so many new nurses and those continuing their education.

This commencement, we were able to celebrate Aimee Bollentin and Joan Parise, faculty and staff in the SON, in receiving their Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees. Congratulations 🎉

To all our students - you did it! The impact you'll make is hard to describe, but we trust the foundation you've built at the IHP will help make that journey both exciting and fulfilling. 🧑‍⚕️🩺

Alex Hoyt, Joan Parise, Jennifer Durning, and Clarissa Michalak attended and presented some of their awesome research and also had the opportunity to learn from other presenters.

Last week Dr. Eleonor Pusey-Reid led a class for the Kennedy Center Home Health Aid training and then students Eleanor Graber and Taryn Marquis led the skills sign off.

The partnership between the Kennedy Center and the SON was developed through the Sleeper Center Mobile Health Program. It's an amazing opportunity to work get into the community, learn, and grow here at the IHP.

School of Nursing hosted a Research Day and welcomed Dr. Kathryn Post, PhD, RN, ANP-BC as the keynote speaker, discussing her experiences in cancer research from idea, funding, and finally publication. Thank you Kathryn for the fantastic presentation! 🗣️🎉

Faculty members Dr. John Wong and Dr. Clara Gona organized the event with poster and podium sessions from faculty, term lecturer faculty, and students, highlighting the amazing research done within the organization. 📣🏥

🎉 Congratulations Sigma Inductees! 🎉

Last week Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Margie Sipe conducted the induction of current IHP nursing students into Sigma chapter Upsilon Lambda.

The School of Nursing welcomed Dr. Rebecca Schnall, PhD, MPH, RN-BC, FAAN, FACMI to speak on her not only engaging but informative studies in a presentation titled Informatics in Action: Building Patient-Centered Digital Interventions to Improve Care for the Annual Natalie Petzold Lecture.

From the School of Nursing Dean Maura Abbott and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Margie Sipe presented Dr. Rebecca and the history of the Natalie Petzold Endowment, which made this lecture possible.

The Bette Ann Harris ’83 Distinguished Alumni Award is the Institute’s highest alumni recognition, while the Emerging Leader Alumni Award goes to an alumna/us who has graduated within the past 10 years.
