This summer, Gabby Buendia had the opportunity to experience an internship at Eckenhoff Saunders Architects in Chicago!

The highlight of her internship has genuinely been getting to know people at the firm and being able to joke around and laugh with them even when pressing deadlines are around the corner.

A challenge she’s had to go through is switching gears doing different kinds of tasks for multiple projects at once. Her projects ranged anywhere from multifamily to healthcare.

Some advice she offers is to be open to every task or project, no matter how much experience you have with it. That’s the only way you can truly learn.

Thank you so much Gabby for sharing a glimpse of your internship experience! by @iidaisu

Before the fall semester begins, we wanted to share the experiences from some of our peers’ internships this summer! Our first highlight is from Fiona McLaughlin, who spent her internship in Chicago at Huntsman Architectural Group. Her highlight of the internship was attending Neocon with her coworkers. An unexpected challenge she faced was hand-sketching space plans since she prefers Revit. For students seeking an internship, Fiona advises to cling to any connection you can and nurture those connections by communicating any way you can. Go to events and engage in conversations! Though it can be intimidating to talk to professionals, they do not expect you to know everything and appreciate the effort and courage it takes to step out of your comfort zone! by @iidaisu

Last week, a couple of students from our chapter of IIDA, Gabrielle Buendia and Kristen Ortiz, were able to participate in the IIDA National Student Design Charette at NeoCon! Huge congratulations to both women for not only participating but also each winning an award for their designs! We hope that anyone else who went to NeoCon had a great time and were able to be inspired by all of the upcoming design strategies! by @iidaisu
