Some stories find you before you even realise you’re looking for them.

When I first arrived in the UK, Leeds was my entry point. I was doing my master’s, finding my feet, and one day, walking to the shops with a friend, I saw a poster:

“Remembering David Oluwale.”

I recognised the name immediately. Nigerian.

But I had no idea who he was.

I went home, searched his name, and discovered the story of a Nigerian man who came to Britain in 1949, made a life in Leeds, and whose final years were marked by homelessness, racism, harassment and violence.

Years later, after finishing my master’s, the first dance work I was commissioned to create was about David.

So it feels significant to return to his story now.

On Nigeria’s Independence Day, and at the beginning of UK Black History Month, I’m remembering David Oluwale.

Not just how he died.

But who he was.

A Nigerian abroad. A man who came before many of us. A story that should not have been forgotten.

Remember him.

Day 4 of filming in public!!

Today’s challenge was simple: get my camera out and capture the moment.

So I took it with me to @t0nit0ne and @tonitoldmepod live show and filmed.

No overthinking. No voiceover. No deep reflection.

Just me, my camera, and a really good night. A very pleasant night actually.

Progress, apparently, sometimes looks like simply pulling out your phone and pressing record.
And I made a friend🥹

See you tomorrow.

Day 3 of #IjemeFilmsInPublic 🎥

Today’s challenge: try products in public.

Foundation. Lipstick. Perfume.

And honestly, the biggest thing I learned?

NOBODY CARES.

Not about me filming.
Not about me trying things.
Not about what I’m doing with my phone.

Everyone is too busy living their own lives.

So I’m learning to stop worrying about being watched and just film the damn video.

See you tomorrow. 🎥 by @ijeme.bare
