•When you place Frieren in quiet natural settings, do you think of landscapes as companions rather than backgrounds?

ika: I think that’s a lovely way to put it. When I plan out my illustration, the main purpose of my background is to complement my main subject. I never want my backgrounds to feel like an afterthought or just something to fill up the space. I view backgrounds as a great way to support my subject and tell a story. In return, I want to make it so that my characters make my landscapes feel alive by how they interact with what’s in my environment. It’s kind of like a relationship, I think!

I enjoy illustrating Frieren’s interaction with her environment in subtle ways. Things like tapping on a cup while looking out the window or the rippling of water from light rain. I think nuances like that bring life to a painting. Being thoughtful I feel can make a drawing feel more like a moment. By focusing on how a character interacts or observes their surroundings, the landscape stops being a background and starts being a companion that shares with the character.
