Min Wain? Where are you from? (2025)

Late last year, got the opportunity to attempt to answer that seemingly simple, yet intricately complicated question that has followed me my whole life, with @alriwaq ’s Application 004 Art Residency Program.

Through the residency, I got to conceptualise and represent the diasporic experiences of the Desi Khaleejis, to spark a conversation and challenge the binary notion of identity, belonging and home.

Spelling ‘Home’ in binary code, the centrepiece featured a 32-grid artwork composed of 1s, 0s, interspersed with question marks, symbolising the rigid binary perception of perceived belonging: citizens (1), non-citizens (0), and the ambiguous status of the diasporic individuals (?). Complementing the grid was a video installation that displayed the internal conflict faced by Desi Khaleeji diasporic communities, mirroring the overlapping, yet distinct, layers of identity.

Incredibly grateful for all the wonderful people I met, the thought provoking conversations I had and the time well spent during the residency - Time that will forever occupy a special corner of my heart.

‎ضمن البرنامج المصاحب لمعرض Meaningful/less / لزوم ما لا يلزم، ينضم القيّمان الفنيان شِرين فكري وخُرّم سلمان في جولة عبر المعرض، للتوقف عند الأعمال المشاركة ومناقشة الأفكار والمواضيع التي تشكّل المعرض، والتساؤلات التي تنشأ خلال المرور بالأزمة، ومحاولة فهمها والتعامل معها، وصولاً إلى حالة من السلام والتقبّل.

Khurram Salman and Shereen Fekri

As part of the public programme accompanying “Meaningful/less / لزوم ما لا يلزم”, curators Shereen Fekri and Khurram Salman will lead a tour through the exhibition, pausing with the participating works and discussing the ideas and themes shaping the exhibition, and the questions it raises around _crisis, process, and arrival_ within the realities of contemporary life.

The tour offers an opportunity to engage more closely with the works and the different approaches of the participating artists, while hearing the curators’ perspectives on the exhibition and its context.

مرحبًا بكم في النسخة الرابعة من Photo Jam، ضمن البرنامج المصاحب لمعرض Meaningful/less – لزوم ما لا يلزم، في لقاء مفتوح يستضيفه خرّم سلمان (‪@ikhurram.salman‬)، بمشاركة شِرين فكري‪@shereenf‬nf).

تدور هذه النسخة حول إيجاد السكينة والمعنى في تفاصيل الحياة العادية. ففي زمن يطغى عليه السعي المستمر نحو الأفضل، والتشبع الرقمي، وضجيج الأسئلة الوجودية، قد نجد بعضًا من الراحة حين نعيد انتباهنا إلى ما هو بسيط وقريب منا: بقعة شمس على الأرض، سرير لم يُرتّب بعد، كوب نصف فارغ، نزهة هادئة، أو لحظة غروب.

ندعو المشاركين إلى مشاركة صور لتلك التفاصيل اليومية الصغيرة التي قد تبدو عابرة أو بلا أهمية، لكنها تمنحنا شعورًا بالثبات، أو لحظة نلتقط فيها أنفاسنا وسط كل هذا الضجيج.

Welcome to the fourth Photo Jam as part of the Meaningful/less exhibition programming; hosted in an open studio format by Khurram Salm‪an @ikhurram.salman ) and featuring Shereen F‪ekhri @shereenf)

The jam is all about finding solace and weight in the ordinary existence. In an era of hyper-optimisation, digital overload and existential noise, peace often arrives when we shrink our focus down to the immediate—a patch of sunlight on a floor, an unmade bed, a half-empty cup, or perhaps a quiet walk or sunset. This theme asks participants to share images of everyday, seemingly insignificant little details that ground them or might bring a breath of relief.

Join us for a casual, standing-room evening of photo sharing, print exploration, and creative conversations.

Whether you shoot on film, digital, or your phone, everyone is welcome.

Among the returned / من عوّاده is a collective body of work shaped by Eid — how we remember and remake our relation with it. Bringing together various voices from our community and their selected mediums, it gathers intimate reflections of Eid in Bahrain, along with its wider context. The publication invites viewers to re-view Eid from its snapshot moments to its inherited rituals, and the layered narratives in between, however they may be distinct or shared between us.

This has been months in the making along with @we.are.amana and we are super excited to be sharing this with you!

What happens when the places that shaped your childhood are buried or transformed, shifting the ground beneath you?

Me and @meh.adjacent set out to ask that question by staging an encounter with that transformation—not through nostalgia or preservation, but through dissonance. The resulting installation “Bar | Bahar,” used the traditional Gulf folk game as a metaphor for the ongoing tension between memory and reality in Bahrain. The work recalled childhood’s simplicity before the interlude, and explores how both memory and landscape transform over time. With the majority of Bahrain’s coastline radically altered by aggressive land reclamation since the 1990s, the work brings to focus the altering relation of the island with the surrounding sea, erasing familiar places from collective memory.

Exhibited at @alriwaq during the NEST’s In the Lapse of Tides 2025, Bar | Bahar invited public engagement through the act of playing symbolically, tracing the divide between cultural memory and geographic reality. The physical act of jumping between “land” and “sea” staged an active encounter with loss and transformation, asking participants to reflect on how spaces and shared practices have changed, and how we remember what is gone.
