Bubba,Your spirit will always live in my heart. I’ve been blessed to have you as my friend for my entire life.Every time you greeted me, your eyes would light up and you’d hit me with that high-pitched, “Deeeebs!!!” before wrapping me in a big hug. I’d kiss your bald head, and you’d always say, “Love you, baby.”That’s how you made everyone feel. People were drawn to your positive energy, your incredible storytelling, and your infectious laugh. You had those electric dance moves that could spark an entire dance floor.As teammates in high school, I witnessed your fearlessness in competition. You took the mound in the 2001 county championship and pitched a gem to lead us to a Class C title. You had swagger on the basketball court, and we won a summer league championship together. You were a stud wide receiver, and in your only season in football, you scored three touchdowns in one game. I stood on the sideline in awe, wishing it was me.That competitive spirit never left you. You rose through the ranks of cornhole and became the No. 1 ranked player on Long Island. Whatever you did, you gave it everything, and you had an uncanny ability to be great at it. Even on my 40th bday you got on roller skates and were gliding like a free spirit.When brain cancer came into your life, you fought it with that same relentless spirit. Through it all, you kept smiling and embraced the love and support of your family and friends.You fought bravely, but even your strength and swagger could not overcome glioblastoma.Yesterday we lost a truly great man.I’m forever grateful for every memory we shared—Blockbuster sleepovers, driving you around all basketball season after your lead foot got your license suspended junior year, senior cut day when you picked me up blasting Beanie Sigel, making the beer pong tournament finals, unforgettable afternoons at Neptune’s Beach Club, getting low on the dance floor at your backyard wedding, and sharing a “Mia’s Mama’s Milk” when your daughter was born.To have you as a lifelong friend is one of the greatest honors of my life. 2 weeks ago I met @maz_rollers in Mazatlan, Mexico. They were so friendly and embraced me in their community of rollers. They are very active in the community with organizing lessons, safe roller meet-ups, and other fun roller events. They city of Mazatlan has an 8.5 km esplanade (Malecon) along the Pacific Coast, one of the longest in the world which makes Mazatlan a rollerblade destination. On this day I attempted to meet them but I got the location wrong and was on the opposite end of the Malecon, they were so patient with me and just told me start rolling towards them and they would meet me, - “don’t worry we are fast!” they assured me 🙂The road along the Malecon was closed for the Carnaval Parade so we had free range to roll along the road and enjoy the pre parade festivities.
