New mural for the Superior Mural Festival, painted at the amphitheater in downtown Superior, Colorado.

The theme for this year’s festival was Nature and Regrowth, and I wanted to create something playful, vibrant, and connected to the architecture of the space. The design mimics the concentric arches of the amphitheater, with interweaving lines and flowing pixelated flowers moving across the stage.

The vibrant colors represent the changing seasons and the natural cycles of growth, renewal, and transformation.

Huge thanks to @streetwisearts and @townofsuperior for inviting me to be part of this year’s festival and for bringing so much art and energy to Superior. by @illdes

Juniperus procumbens display and kusamono featuring ceramics by @casagrime for the annual @rocky_mountain_bonsai_society bonsai show at the @denverbotanic. @a.l._grime created a bonsai pot that reflected the organic textures found in bark and rock formations. Her Kusamono (a companion plant) vessel was made by pressing nerikomi slabs into lava rocks and then folding into itself, mimicking the layering of sediment in natural landscapes.

This past weekend was incredibly inspiring and fulfilling. I had a blast helping set up and working the show all weekend, while meeting so many amazing bonsai enthusiasts along the way. It was such a great experience, and I’m already looking forward to making next year’s display even better! by @illdes

Say hello to @illdes!

ILL.DES (David Fratu) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the balance between chaos and order, reflecting the ways we seek equilibrium within ourselves, our environments, and the systems we create. Working across murals, painting, sculpture, and functional artwork, his practice draws from a background in technology alongside an ongoing relationship with nature through woodworking and bonsai.

His work investigates the intersection of organic growth and human-made structure where geometry meets natural movement. Through layered patterns, gradients, and flowing linework, ILL.DES creates compositions that feel both structured and alive. These visual systems mirror the tension between technology, humans, and the unpredictability of the natural world.

In the public realm, his murals are designed to create visually engaging environments that invite curiosity, connection, and shared ownership. Many projects evolve through dialogue with local communities, translating collective identity into abstract forms, rhythmic movement, and organic structures that feel both contemporary and timeless. Color, flow, and spatial rhythm become tools for storytelling, allowing viewers from different backgrounds to interpret the work through their own experiences.

ILL.DES approaches each project as a collaborative process rooted in listening, accessibility, and place. Having worked with municipalities, developers, arts organizations, and community groups internationally, he aims to create artwork that not only transforms a space visually but also becomes something communities feel connected to and proud of.

Painted a ’59 Pontiac Star Chief at the iconic historic roadside attraction Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska! 🚗✨

I’ve always wanted to paint a car, so getting the opportunity to transform a classic ’59 Pontiac into a piece of artwork was pretty special. I had a lot of fun designing something that felt right at home in a place as wild and unique as Carhenge.

Huge thank you to everyone at @alliancecreativedistrict for making this happen and for all the support throughout the process! And of course, @carhengealliance for giving me the perfect canvas.

Also, shoutout to the incredible artists who made this experience so much fun

Definitely one of those projects I’ll be remembering for a long time taken in Carhenge, Alliance, Nebraska by @illdes

First Branch Bonsai X ILL.DES T-shirt collab, available now.

We have teamed up with Denver-based artist @illdes for this limited edition t-shirt design.

Sharp geometry, striking patterns, and the tension between chaos and order present the same tension between nature and order you would find in a well-styled tree.

The design is based on this 450+ year-old Colorado Blue Spruce, collected & styled by Todd Schlafer at First Branch Bonsai, in a Sara Rayner ceramic.

Available now - link in bio to purchase.
