.Illegal Art Archivecatalog # IA101Steev Hise – OriginalNovember 11, 1999audio is track 4, “Return of the King”Steev Hise was an essential part of the early days of Illegal Art. He contributed a key track on Deconstructing Beck, “Stuck Together, Falling Apart.” He also ran the server, detritus.net, that hosted our first web pages and email address—allowing others to remain 100% anonymous and untouchable. Finally, he was in touch with ®™ark and persuaded them to sponsor the project, which led to intense media attention.After we released a couple of theme-based compilations, Original started a new series of album releases (hence catalog # 101), which became the main focus of the label. Steev printed all the inserts, found vellum envelopes from an art supplier, and made custom stampers, while we simply replicated the CDs. As we were based in Japan in 1999, the project was also our first co-release with the Tokyo label/store Cha-Bashira, run by German artist Pol Mahlow.Original holds up well so many years later and truly defined the artistry, attention to detail, and prolific sampling that Illegal Art became known for. .Illegal Art Archivecatalog # IA120Økapi & Aldo Kapi Orchestra – Love Him: Økapi Plays The Music Of Aldo KapiFebruary 23, 2010audio is “Everything Must Change p.2,” which Økapi wrote about in the recent Talkhouse playlist: https://talkhouse.com/talkhouse-weekend-playlist-a-sampling-of-the-illegal-art-archiveØkapi is the French-Italian collagist, turntablist, and sample cut-up artist Filippo Paolini. Having a prolific output from the late 90s to mid 2000s, including releases on Comfort Stand and Inflatabl, Filippo was already a respected artist in the international plunderphonics scene. One critic at the time compared him to The Avalanches: “Paolini shares the same interest in taking the most disparate of sounds—be it the ‘bah’ of sheep, sweeping string arrangements, slivers of glitch, meandering horns, Spike Jones-like breaks, chopped-up newscasts—and apparently juxtaposing them in the most unobvious manners possible.” Yet, it was a bit more whimsical and experimental.We connected with Økapi in the late 2000s as he was preparing two vinyl releases called Love Him for KLM Recordings (a label run by French pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque) and decided to release a CD version. We released the next project as well. It initially feels like a transmission beamed out to the infinite expanse of space, taking on an otherworldly color with the effects-laden vocals and watery synth melodies. After ascending skyward atop grand synth swells, the track suddenly diverts into sparse, robotic electronica before filling out with careening live drums and entrancing oscillating synth tones. A raging tide of rhythms rushes the track towards an ecstatic climax, only for it to sprawl out once more into its initial spacey ambience as it winds downwards."
