I experience a dream, one that isn’t ordinary, but rather supernatural. A serpent appears as a messenger, presenting a vision of myself holding up an obsidian mirror to my face. This mirror compels me to reflect inward, offering not a glimpse of my physical form, but a revelation of my inner self.

This is a close up of the first main panel from my illustrated codex about a symbolic personal journey of mine in discovering my Mesoamerican heritage.

Here is my professor and I communing together and him symbolically gifting knowledge (of my ancestral roots) to me, his student, and I receiving it with an open hand.

On the floor, there is a resin incense burner, books, and a jade bead pectoral with a cut conch shell. In the bowl are various symbols of maize; an olmec ceremonial jade axe, the glyph for tamal (waaj) and an ear of maize.

Reading from the left to right, top to bottom in columns of two

Transcription (& translation):
1. Yakaw (He gives), 2. Kujil (knowledge)
3. Ajtzib (scribe/ teacher/ professor)
4. u ti ch'ok (to his student)

"The professor gives knowledge to his student"

Following the defeat of the lord of fright and death, the young man continues his journey towards the exit of the underworld. He finds a canoe on the edge of the river, and he and his companions escape from the mouth of the mountain.

The intensity of the movement caused his blood to boil and trigger a transformation. He awakened the inner strength of a jaguar and his entire body became infused with it. With his newfound power, he overwhelms and defeats his enemy, winning the ball game.

Against all odds, Angel proceeded courageously and challenged the lord of death to a ballgame on the ball court. The movement of the ball and the smacking of rubber on flesh and stone triggered something within to come alive.

As we crossed the threshold into the underworld, we were met by a vast chamber dominated by masonry ball court. Standing on the field was a ghastly figure, a lord of fright and death. Clutching a rubber ball in one hand, he fixed his gaze on me and beckoned me to challenge him to a game.

Our journey takes us to the center of the world, where we arrive at a majestic ceiba tree that supports the sky. Under its roots a portal to the underworld awaits, and it is there where I confront my deepest fears.

As part of my vision I enter a dream world with supernatural creatures and places. I am met by a friendly xoloitzcuintli and a giant toad. They become my guides for this quest into the supernatural world.
