we're both dead and scared of the black
This life of games and diligent trust
It's the things we do and the things we must
I'm now tired of being cussed
So go sleep forever end to dust

Resident Evil 4 arrived in 2005 as a total transformation of the franchise, reinventing what had before been first and foremost a horror series into a deeply atmospheric action shooter.

I want to emphasize the word "atmospheric" here- it's the first descriptor that comes to mind when I'm discussing Resident Evil 4. Capcom chooses a somewhat unusual setting for a piece of horror media: rural Spain. I'm reminded of the 18th century novel A Manuscript Found in Saragossa written by Polish nobleman Jan Potocki, a frame-tale whose narrator wanders around Napoleonic-era Spain, encountering a melange of thieves, sorcerers, inquisitors, conspirators and vagabonds, each of whom share their own series of intertwining narratives. The setting here is uniquely dream-like, and at times horrific. I think Resident Evil 4-with its gloomy and fogswept landscape, its cloaked villains, its puzzles and conspiracies-recaptures this unique atmosphere better than any other piece of narrative media I've encountered.

What both Potocki's Manuscript and RE4 successfully capture is an almost alien quality of central Spain's rural landscape. Catholic cathedrals lay at the end of dilapidated footpaths across desolate plateaus. The land itself is etched with the memories of inter-religious strife: the Moorish conquest, the Moorish expulsion, and, of course, the Inquisition. It's appropriate that both The Manuscript Found in Saragossa and Resident Evil 4 feature dark, religious conspiracy as central components of their plots. by @illtillldeath
