A few weeks ago I had the honor and privilege officiating the wedding of one of my former Young Life guys (Cole Smith). This was one of the highlights of my time in ministry. I’ve know Cole and his family for 12 years, this was the honor of a lifetime. I got the call right after Cole proposed and we got to both celebrate it together! Cole’s father passed away two years ago, he was a kind, humble, gifted, and godly man. It was such a blessing and an honor to be able to be there for Cole and Isabella. (First Photo)

A few hours after, I was driving back home and got the call that my friend Alex Nadykto had passed away (second photo). I made a handful of phone calls and drove the rest of the way home in silence. I am not a stranger to grief, I have lost friends and loved ones, I have sat in hospice rooms and I have spoken at memorial services. Something about that day feels deep and guttural. John Lennox describes moments like this as “beauty and bombs” and I can’t shake it. I’ve known Alex for 10 years, we have been groomsmen together for multiple of our friends weddings. He loved the Lord, his wife Stacy, their children, and quite literally almost everyone he met. His capacity for kindness, his work ethic, his passion, humility, and sense of humor is something that I will miss and continue to be inspired by. My heart goes out to his wife Stacy and their family. My heart goes out to his best friend and business partner Justin and his wife Amanda.

A few weeks before he passed away, I felt the urge to call him and catch up while I was driving home from class. I ended leaving him a voicemail instead. I loved getting to laugh with Alex. He was so goofy and yet intelligent and thoughtful. Alex, I love you and I miss you. My Slavic brother and friend, I am grateful for our friendship and I will cherish our memories. May you rest in peace and rejoice in the presence of our Lord until we meet again. 🕊️

I graduated with my masters degree (MABL) from Western Seminary this last Saturday. Thankful for @taylortsvyetkov_ who supported me over the last few years while I worked all day and spent most evenings in classes or doing homework. Thankful for my professors that challenged and encouraged me along the way. Thankful for the cohort that I got to be a part.
