The Projects Taught Me Poetry’. I grew up where the walls peeled like sump-burnt skin. where roaches wrote love letters on kitchen counters and sirens sang lullabies through cracked windows. Where childhood wasn’t soft but sharp, like glassing your sneakers, like your name being whispered wrong because of where you slept that night. The bricks I was born between weren’t just buildings. They were warnings. Etched in concrete like scars we learn to ignore. My address, a code the world cracked before I could even spell it. said everything about me before I got the chance to See, other kids had lemonade stands. I had liquor bottles lining the curb like glass trophies, no one wanted to win. Other kids threw fits, and it was just kids being kids.

Me? My anger was prophecy. My silence? Suspicion. My joy? Too loud. My sadness, inconvenience. I had to learn how to dim myself in the name of being platable. Had to wear toughness like armor, never smile on command, because when you’re the boy from the projects, you don’t get grace. You get judged in advance.
