Hermissenda Nudibranchs are similar sizes/colors so how do you easily distinguish them? The cerata! 🤩🤍
H. opalescens has a white tip on each cerata, whereas H. crassicornis has a long white line running up the front of each cerata and no white tip. Both species are about the same size—they can grow to eight centimeters, although less than five centimeters is more usual.

In 2016, nudibranch researcher Dr. Ángel Valdés, a professor in the College of Biological Sciences at Cal Poly Pomona, pointed out that there are in fact three species of Hermissenda, not one, with two species present in California (the third is found in Japan and Russia).

Beautiful but deadly 🐌🧡
Slide ➡️ for a Fun Fact
On the sandy bottom of the Red Sea, this tiny nudibranch slowly made its way across the grains of sand. Moments like this are easy to miss, but when you slow down underwater, an entire miniature world starts to appear

Yesterday we found tiny dragons on the beach 🥹💙

Blue dragons, blue bottles and blue buttons all make up the “blue fleet,” which are little organisms that live on the ocean’s surface, feeding on one another and drifting wherever the wind and currents take them! 🌊

Blue dragons even steal the stinging cells from blue bottles and store them for their own defence. 😮 We spent a solid hour watching this one feeding (I’ve heard about it before but never actually seen it in action)! 🤩
