During the first half of 2026, we had the opportunity to develop and present “𝒮𝑒𝓃𝓈𝓊𝒶𝓁 𝒫𝓊𝒷𝓁𝒾𝒸𝓈: 𝐼𝓃𝒻𝓇𝒶𝓈𝓉𝓇𝓊𝒸𝓉𝓊𝓇𝑒𝓈 𝑜𝒻 𝐼𝓃𝓉𝒾𝓂𝒶𝒸𝓎” as a J-Term seminar at Harvard GSD @harvardgsd and later as part of Unmasking Space at D-ARCH ETH Zürich @unmaskingspace @arch.ethz .

Led by Victoria Suárez, with the support of Ignacio Lira, the research examines how digital technologies increasingly blur the boundaries between private and public space. Through architecture, media, platform economies, and pop culture, the project investigates how visibility, performance, and exposure have become central conditions of contemporary life.

Across both iterations, we explored how cameras, screens, and networked devices transform the home into a site of production, circulation, and labor. Drawing from architecture, film, television, reality shows, and platform-based case studies, the project traces how technological infrastructures reshape subjectivity, work, and the built environment.

At ETH Zürich, the lecture focused particularly on labor in erotic content platforms such as OnlyFans, examining the material, spatial, and economic infrastructures that sustain them and asking how platform economies reorganize visibility and architectural space.

This work forms part of Victoria Suárez’s ongoing independent research developed at Harvard Graduate School of Design under the guidance of James Graham @jmzgraham , with additional support from Malkit Shoshan @malkit_shoshan , Marina Otero Verzier and Diane Davis. taken in Virtual World by @ilrmnts

As part of the project, a speculative film imagines a near-future Chilean Patagonia transformed by the large-scale deployment of renewable energy infrastructures. Set in 2045, the narrative draws from environmental reports, energy forecasts, and peer-reviewed research examining the territorial, ecological, and social implications of the ongoing energy transition.

Developed using AI image and video generation tools, the film explores the landscapes that emerge between promises of sustainability, notions of progress, and the material realities of extraction. Through photorealistic synthetic imagery, the project reflects on contemporary cultures of acceleration and asks what it means to represent territorial transformation through technologies that are themselves embedded within extractive landscapes.

Special thanks to Rosalea Monacella @rosalea_monacella for her guidance and support throughout the development of this project.

The publication includes interviews with three female architects and researchers—Serena Dambrosio, Linda Schilling Cuellar, and Tatiana Carbonell—whose work engages with acceleration, technological mediation, extraction, and environmental transformation. It also features a glossary developed as a constellation of concepts that emerged throughout the research process. Bringing together contemporary theory, artistic practices, historical figures, and critical terminology, it traces the cultural, political, and ecological imaginaries through which extractive landscapes are produced, contested, and reimagined.

We are excited to welcome Victoria Suárez and Ignacio Lira next Thursday!

SENSUAL PUBLICS: INFRASTRUCTURES OF INTIMACY

This lecture unmasks intimacy as a political and spatial infrastructure, examining how architecture, media, and the body organize visibility, affect, and exposure today. Drawing on theories of intimacy, spectatorship, and political economy, it asks what it means to design for constant visibility in a techno-capitalist world, where private life becomes productive and intimacy is mobilized as labour. Through historical, cinematic, domestic, urban, and platform-based case studies, the lecture traces architectures of exposure—from the home to the city to digital environments—revealing how perception, subjectivity, and architectural work are reshaped by regimes of looking. The session departs from a central question: what does it mean to design for being seen, when exposure itself operates as infrastructure? In contemporary techno-capitalist contexts, architectural practice is deeply entangled with platforms, metrics, and regimes of spectatorship that convert visibility into value. Intimacy is no longer opposed to work; it is actively mobilized as a spatial, affective, and economic resource, structuring how bodies perform, how interiors function, and how cities circulate attention.

Victoria Suárez Romera is a Spanish architect and Fulbright Fellow completing a Master in Design Studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Her work explores intimacy and visibility across architecture, research, and exhibition-making. She has worked at MVRDV, Dorte Mandrup, and most recently at the Brooklyn Museum.

Ignacio Lira Montes is a Chilean architect and Master in Design Studies candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. His work bridges architecture, curatorial practice, and decolonial research, focusing on infrastructures, media, and visual culture. He currently teaches and works as a Teaching Assistant at Harvard GSD. by @ilrmnts

Hey sexy GSDsers! We’ll be teaching a J-Term seminar titled “𝒮𝑒𝓃𝓈𝓊𝒶𝓁 𝒫𝓊𝒷𝓁𝒾𝒸𝓈: 𝐼𝓃𝒻𝓇𝒶𝓈𝓉𝓇𝓊𝒸𝓉𝓊𝓇𝑒𝓈 𝑜𝒻 𝐼𝓃𝓉𝒾𝓂𝒶𝒸𝓎.”
The seminar explores the sensual as a political and spatial category, examining how architecture, media, and the body shape contemporary publics. We will study how intimacy becomes infrastructural in a techno-capitalist world where private and public increasingly blur. Through readings, film, and spatial exercises, students will analyze architectures of exposure—from the home to the city to digital platforms—and gain tools to critically interpret and design spaces through regimes of visibility.

See u soon!
