Color Group is presenting our second show, Local Color, in the viewing room, and our very own Maria Stabio @mstabio will have a solo exhibition in the main space. I’m happy to share my piece included in Plants, Animals and Sky @canada.nyc. I’m amazed by the work of the infinitely talented @msgrauer and #wallacewhitney in compiling this extraordinary show. It’s a blessing to be in the same space as many of my all-time favorite painters, including Lois Dodd, Joan Snyder, Katherine Bradford, Marsden Hartley, and George Inness, to name a few, plus so many of my extraordinary contemporary peers.

I paint outdoors to be closer to nature, to listen to it, not to capture it. It is important to me to surrender to my surroundings and let go of art world strategies. That’s partly how the plastic frames came about: doing something wrong that feels right. I embrace this discord and let it move me forward. The plastics I find in excess in the landscape have a weathered patina. It’s almost as if nature is trying to subsume the mess we have made. I’m grateful to be part of this web of artists illuminating their relationships to these subjects in this show.

Dear Friends! I have two works, my circle painting Swoop and small piece Sojourn, in this wonderful, sprawling, collage-style installation, running throughout a house/barn/horse arena in Maine. I appreciate getting to see the caps interact with the architecture and play against the wood ground. The ART SHOW 2026 features work by 195+ (!!) Maine-affiliated artists and artists from beyond! It has been exciting to see snippets of the show, and here are just a few glimpses… but it’s something you’ve gotta experience in person. I hope to be there for the closing on August 29th! : )

Join us tonight, Saturday, August 8th, 6:00–7:30 PM, for a conversation moderated by Saul Ostrow with six of the eight artists in True Colors — Mary DeVincentis, Jai Hart, Riad Miah, Ilse Sorensen Murdock, Julia Rooney, and Cordy Ryman.

Free and open to the public. Refreshments served.

The exhibition's title carries a double reference. First, to Anthony Haden-Guest's legendary "True Colors" column in Vanity Fair — his chronicle of 1980s downtown New York, where glamour, performance, visibility, and hidden dynamics constantly overlapped. Here, though, True Colors still works as a kind of tell-all, but turns its lens on something else: a space where authenticity and performance, mood and structure, surface and revelation fold into one another.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Ilse Sørensen Murdock

Works are currently on view in “True Colors” through July 18!

Ilse Sørensen Murdock holds a Certificate from the New York Studio School, a BFA from Parsons School of Design, 2000, and a MFA from Rutgers University at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, 2009. Murdock has been a resident of The Edward F. Albee Foundation, Skowhegan, Vermont Studio Center and a returning resident to DNA Provincetown Residency. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the United States, including with Alice Gauvin Gallery, ME and Tibor de Nagy Gallery, NY. In 2019 Murdock received the Cultural Award Grant from the American Scandinavian Society, concluding in an exhibition at the Trygve Lie Gallery, New York, 2020. She was also included in a survey of painting: Here and Now at the Center for Contemporary Art, Bedminster, New Jersey, 2020, and most recently exhibited in a two person show at Platform Project Space, Dumbo, NY. Murdock produces work out of her studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

TRUE COLORS opened Saturday night at Freight + Volume! I forgot to take some snaps with the great group of artists in the show. I was too distracted by the Knicks!! Anyhow, I did get a pic with a glimpse of my caps pieces tucked in the back, figures for scale ; )) TRUE COLORS runs through mid-July. Big thanks to the F + V team for your support of my work!!

Through distinct material and formal strategies, these conditions circulate within True Colors, shaping the work of the participating artists. Cordy Ryman’s linked wooden constructions make color inseparable from materiality, structure, and residue, while Mary DeVincentis’s psychologically charged compositions hover at the edge of dissolution. Jai Hart’s sewn, stuffed, and densely patterned fabric works push painting toward bodily objecthood. Julia Rooney’s intimate paintings filter abstraction through the visual logic of illuminated screens and digital interfaces, while Ilse Sørensen Murdock’s landscape-derived works suspend color and imagery between immediacy and atmosphere. Riad Miah’s illusionistic shaped canvases compress gesture and process into dense chromatic configurations; Paul Sevigny’s compositional constraints test how little is required for color to generate spatial and structural variation; and Meghan Brady’s cut-paper-like geometries transform color into rhythms, intervals, and movement.

We are delighted to host the group presentation, ‘Local Color’ this month alongside Maria Stabio: Myths in Translation. The artists included are:
