There was a season when nothing about our life looked like it was working. Graham and I had a new mortgage, a new baby, we’d just planted a church, and moved a thousand miles from every family member we had. We had no money and a decision to make. If we’d tried to fix everything at once that year, we would’ve quit before we started. So we picked one thing. Our marriage, which was being stretched to it’s limit in the transition. We hired a 14-year-old from our neighborhood to show up at our house every Tuesday at 6:30, whether we texted her or not — and Graham and I would ride bikes or just sit at Barnes & Noble because we couldn’t afford to go out to dinner. That one Tuesday a week is still part of why our marriage is healthy today despite the fullness of life with two teenagers and multiple businesses between us. Most people are so busy building a life, they never stop to look at it — and for a while, as a Christian entrepreneurial couple juggling faith, marriage, and businesses, we almost became one of them. In one particularly lean year — new mortgage, new baby, we’d just planted a church, moved a thousand miles from family, and had basically no money — it would’ve been so easy to just keep our heads down and hope things sorted themselves out. Instead we did something we’ve now done for 15 years: we stopped, looked honestly at 11 areas of our life, and picked just one to focus on. That year it was our marriage. This is it guys. 😬 These four simple things are the difference between stagnating and expanding in business and between burning out and burning it all down or living fully alive and thriving. 1. Being regularly across the table from VALUES-ALIGNED women ahead of you in business. 2. Having a connected group of friends at your level of business who will get in the weeds, whiteboard it out and hold you accountable to your goals. 3. Your level of partnership with God in business and ability to discern his voice and leadership since he’s actually the owner and can take it farther than you can. 4. Peers who ask how you are really doing and want the true answer because they are making sure that you are thriving in life and not just in business. Wherever you get them from, these four things need to be regular and consistent in your life!
