A delegation of members from the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU)—including ILWU International President Willie Adams and ILWU International Vice President (Mainland) Bobby Olvera. Jr.—is currently on the East Coast standing shoulder to shoulder with the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) on their picket lines as they strike over working conditions, automation, and wages.“From the start, the ILWU has supported the ILA in their contract negotiations with USMX because we know how much is at stake. ILWU Pensioner President Greg Mitre addresses the Los Angeles Harbor Commission about the recent, disturbing news.Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will not reappoint Diane Middleton to the Los Angeles Harbor Commission, a move that drew surprise and strong criticism from the community and labor leaders.Mayor Bass has instead appointed retired politician John Perez, cousin of former Mayor Antonio Villiaraigosa. Like his cousin, Perez is former CA Assembly Speaker. He is not a Los Angeles Harbor community member and has no maritime experience. His political career ended in 2014 when he lost to Betty Yee for State Board of Equalization. Yee and Villiaraigosa are now candidates for CA Governor when Newsom terms out in 2026.Local representation has been a leading priority as the port has impacted neighboring communities with its rapid growth.Middleton, who is an attorney, also held what has become traditionally a seat that represents labor, and specifically the dockworkers of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union.A labor representative has been included on the panel for some 30 years until now. Embark on the ILWU Walk the Coast journey with a twist of excitement—the 9th Annual Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament.Since our inaugural fundraiser in 2012, we’ve united ILWU locals, affiliates, community friends, and industry companies annually to combat childhood cancer. In 2022, our generous donors helped us raise an impressive $143,343 for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, propelling our cumulative contributions beyond the one-million-dollar mark. This milestone holds special significance as it mirrors the amount sweet Alex raised before her untimely passing at the age of 8. ILWU Walk the Coast’s success underscores the power of selfless love, aiding children, funding research, and supporting families in need.Adding an extra layer of excitement, our 9th annual event features the Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament—an opportunity for camaraderie and spirited competition. Honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on this MLK Day.After speaking at multiple conventions held by the AFL-CIO, Dr. King worked diligently with unions across the nation. In particular, he spent time with ILWU Local 10 in San Francisco. ILWU Local 10 represented cargo ship workers and was one of the first unions that integrated black and white workers, and over time gained many benefits for its members; the Union members were soon described as "Kings of the Wharf". Dr. King was inducted as an honorary member of ILWU Local 10 in 1967.In a speech to the dockworkers, he stated:"I don't feel like a stranger here in the midst of the ILWU.
