A week ago, I woke up to the most horrific news in the most horrible way. “Ilze, I’m sorry for your loss.” “Condolences for your loss.” “Is it true, is Jayden …?”!! Confused, then shocked, and ultimately paralysed by this tragic news… this last week has been one hell of a weight - the kind I haven’t felt for a while… and this just after his grandma’s passing, my aunt, Marianna. But this isn’t just my grief to carry. It belongs to a whole community. Jayden was Ida’s Valley’s own. Before the world knew his name, the Valley did. The streets he played on, the people who watched him grow, the community that poured into him long before he ever wore a national jersey - they all saw this coming. They knew what he had in him. And when he finally stepped onto the world’s biggest stage, he didn’t just carry his own name. He carried Ida’s Valley, Stellenbosch, and every kid from home who now believes it’s possible for them too. This past week, the world stood still to honour him - tributes pouring in from every corner, strangers who never met him mourning like family. But nothing has moved me more than watching my own community come together. That’s who he was. That’s what he built, even without meaning to. Rest well, cuz. *Rest easy, Jayden. 🇿🇦🤎* I keep thinking about how we only truly connected over the past year — messaging back and forth, even during the World Cup, still talking just last week. I never could have known that would be some of our last conversations ... Jayden was humble. Reserved. The kind of person who let his actions speak louder than his words — and yet every word he did share made it clear how much he loved his partner, Aqueelah and his young daughter, Allaia and son, Jude. That was who he was at his core, long before the cameras and the crowds. I was so excited to watch my cousin grow — not just into a World Cup player, but into a legend of this game for years to come. Instead, today we celebrate the legacy he already leaves behind. From Ida’s Valley in Stellenbosch, all the way to the World Cup stage — he inspired our hometown, he inspired the youth of our nation, he carried Bafana Bafana with pride and gave South Africa a gift it will never forget.
