Scenes from around the resort we were staying in Kumarakom.

All around Vembanad Lake and backwaters of Kumarakom in Kerala, India you will find these "Chinese fishing nets "
Introduced by early traders or explorers from China between the 14th and 15th centuries, these cantilevered lift nets made of wood and bamboo use a clever system of large counterweight stones to dip and raise the massive nets.

You can also find them by the seaside lining the shores of Fort Kochi.

Cruising the backwaters of Kerala on a houseboat.

An absolute must-do if you're in Kerala, located on the southern coast of India.
You just chill, relax, and sight-see. You can rent a houseboat for part of the day or even a few days. You can rent it just for yourself or share it with others to spread the cost.
They come in a single deck to a double deck. From a 1-bedroom to several bedrooms. It has bathrooms, a kitchen and living areas.
The houseboat usually comes with a crew of 3, the captain, the cook, and another crew member. The meals cooked on the boat are simple, with rice, fish and veggies. If you want a more fancy meal the captain can stop at a nearby seafood market where you can purchase prawns and crabs and the cook will prepare it for you.

We opted for an overnight stay on the boat thinking we will be docked in open waters for the night. but we ended up parked at the dock for the night. Regulation prohibits the boats from being in open waters at night.☹️

My advice, rent the houseboat for the day and spend the night at one of the resorts by the water.

After visiting some of the hill top towns in the Puglia region of Italy, we're in the lowlands today visiting the city of Leece.

Also called the " Florence of the South " Leece is the cultural and economic hub in the region located on the Salento Peninsula - right at the " heel " of Italy's boot.

From the town of Bari, which we used as our base for exploring Puglia we took the 2-hr train ride to Leece.
We're here to visit Leece's Baroque architecture and ruins dating from when the city was a major Roman settlement.

At and around the Piazza Sant'Oronzo in the historic city center, is where you can see most of the city's major sites.
There's the Palazzo del Sergio " Il Sedille ", and the Roman marble column of Saint Oronzo, the city's patron saint
There's the partially excavated 2nd-century Roman Theater ( Anfiteatro Romano ) with a capacity of 25,000 people right in the center of the city and a smaller "hidden" amphitheatre with a capacity of 5,000 not too far away. " Hidden " because it is largely concealed behind residential palazzos.
Also at the Piazza is the emblem of the city - the wolf under the holm oak. Popular tradition says "don't step on it " . Local superstition holds that university students should never directly step on the emblem, as doing so will bring bad luck and prevent them from graduating.

The city of Leece is currently on the UNESCO's Tentative list.

Continuing our exploration of Puglia.
Our last stop for the day was the white-washed hilltop town of Ostuni.

Ostuni is famously known as the "White City" or "La Vita Blanca" for its bright white-washed houses.
The houses and buildings are painted in white with limestone as has been the practice here that started centuries ago as a disinfectant during plagues and to reflect the hot sun.

We're here to visit its cathedral, the Cathedral of Ostuni which has been designated as a national monument.

The town is on top of a hill. Exploring the town involves a lot of climbing up stairs and down. You can hire a tuk tuk in town for an hour or so but it can get pricey.

While wandering the medieval town of Altamura we found ourselves into dead-end cloisters or courtyards (claustri).
Claustris are like shared outdoor rooms or common areas where families historically lived, cooked and socialized together . Many feature an ancient well or stone oven which were communal ovens in medieval times.

In this one particular claustri we stumbled upon the oldest operating bakery in Altamura dating back to 1391 . The Antica Forno Santa Caterina makes the traditional Pane di Altamura ( PDP certified wheat bread) , focacia bread and local baked goods.

When we arrived we got to observe the baker work the oven and in front of the bakery was a small restaurant where a couple of nonnas were making pasta.

We decided to have lunch there and that day's special was fresh pasta with pancetta and beans.
Buon apetito.

Brief visit at another hilltop town in Puglia, Altamura.

We're here to visit the Altamura Cathedral, a Romanesque - Gothic cathedral built by the then Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in 1232.

Altamura is also known as the " City of Bread ", famous for its Pane de Altamura, a traditional sourdough bread that has earned PDO status.

It is the first European bread to earn PDO ( Protected Designation of Origin ) status where strict rules govern the bread's origin and production.

While walking around Altamura we saw bunches of tomatoes and garlic hanging outside ( photo 4 ).
We found out hanging tomatoes and garlic outside of homes serves two primary purposes: first for preserving and prolonging the shelf life of the tomatoes and garlic for the cold winter.
Another purpose they serve is related to superstition and is supposed to ward off bad luck

Wandering the narrow streets and alleyways of Martina Franca.

A brief stop at one of the white washed hilltop towns while exploring the Puglia region of Italy.

Marina Franca is the largest town in the Itria Valley of Puglia, known for its white washed buildings and ornate Baroque and Rococo palaces.

We arrived in Marina Franca in the middle of the day and unfortunately everything was closed.
Shops, palaces, churches and restaurants were closed. The sun was bright and temps in the 30s with just a few souls and fools (us) walking around. The town shuts down at this time of the day and reopens later in the afternoon. When it is much cooler, I guess.

We'll just have to come back and revisit. taken in Centro Storico, Martina Franca by @ima1derer

Some of the castles and fortresses along the Middle Rhine.

These castles and fortresses were built between the 12th and 14th century at a time when there was no strong leader to rule the land. Rival counts, bishops and princes then built these fortresses to mark their hold of the land.
The Rhine River was a major commercial trade highway and the different lords of the castles would force passing ships to pay heavy taxes for safe passage
The lords would become rich by setting up customs posts every few miles.

Part 2 of our river cruise down the Middle Rhine, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Cruisin' down the Upper Middle Rhine and some of the beautiful churches along the river.

We had two more days left on this recent trip through Southern Germany and we had a couple more things to check off our list. One of them was a river cruise down the Rhine River.
So the following day we took the train from Frankfurt to the town of Ruddesheim and boarded a boat that will take us from Ruddesheim to the town of St Goar.

We opted for just a one way trip and on the return we took the local train back from St Goar.
This is one of the more picturesque sections of the Rhine River with numerous castles, fortresses and historic ruins lining the cliffs along the river ( more on the castles on my next post )

This part of the Rhine River has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its unique cultural landscape shaped by 2,000 years of trade, history, and human architecture, featuring dramatic steep cliffs, medieval castles, and terraced vineyards.

Wandering at the Marienplatz in Munich.

Note the gilded statue of Mary holding the Christ child atop a marble column located in the middle of the square in front of the New and Old Town Halls of Munich. This statue from the late 1500s symbolizes Mary as the Protector and Patroness of Bavaria.
