Six years. Six years since I lost my big brother, and somehow the pain of missing you has never really gotten any smaller. I’ve just gotten better at carrying it.

This year has been one of the hardest because I turn 23. You were only 22 when you left us, and now I’m going to be older than my big brother. I never imagined I’d have to live a life where I got older than you. It feels so wrong knowing that from here on, every birthday I have is an age you never got to be. I would give anything to have you here so I could tell you about growing up, about everything that’s happened, and to hear you give me shit about getting old.

I’ve had so many moments this year where I’ve needed you more than I can explain. And when I have my surgery, I know I’ll be wishing more than ever that you were here. I wish you could be the one sitting beside me, telling me not to worry. I wish I could hear you say, “You’re stronger than you think,” and hear you remind me that I’ll be okay. I wish I could have my big brother there to make me laugh when I’m scared, hold my hand when things get hard, and tell me you’re proud of me. I know you’d probably make some stupid joke just to take my mind off it, and honestly, I’d give anything to hear that joke right now.

There are so many things I wish I could tell you. So many moments I wish you could be here for. I wish you could see who I’ve become. I wish you could see me turning 23. I wish you could see me getting through things I never thought I could. Most of all, I wish I didn’t have to keep doing all of this without you.

You’ll always be my big brother, no matter how old I get. I’ll always be your little sister, and a part of me will always be that little girl who just wants her big brother back.

Six years without you, and I still miss you like it was yesterday. I love you forever, Mitchell. I hope somehow you know how much I still need you, how much I still talk about you, and how much I wish you were here🪽 by @imagenp_03
