Silvio Cadelo, Mark-of-the-Dog, 1989. Precision and psychedelia. Italians know how to do it. You could try to figure out what this comic is ‘about’ or you could look at the drawings. I wouldn’t try to do both at the same time. by @imagepoisoning

The most unusual David Hockney book I’ve got. A facsimile edition of a 1982 summer sketchbook. Includes blank, upside-down, and pre-torn-out pages! Phone numbers and reminders scrawled around uber-abbreviated drawings and pastels. Kind of a “grail” for this DH fanboy. His work means a lot to me, RIP by @imagepoisoning

300 page survey of early British pop art from an exhibition in 2013 (by the creepy-sounding “Christie’s Private Sales”). Satisfying 11x11 inch softcover format and good reproductions. Peter Blake dominates by a furlong or so, with lots of Paolozzi, Phillips, Hockney, Kitaj, Allen Jones—and some others I was less familiar with like Colin Self and Jann Haworth. Everyone seems to be building huge canvases and sculptures, then divvying them up into these coffers and going to work filling the spaces with wrappers, toys, scraps, uncanny takes on basic shapes and primary colors. But especially with Blake and Phillips and Tilson, the hoard is filtered through a formalist sorting method - everything is in its right place in the lattice. Occasional male nudes by Hockney and Boshier break up the monotony of the obsession with lad-mag girls and starlets.

Drawings from The Art of Ponyo (Viz, 2009). These Viz Ghibli books are sort of bad about crediting individual studio artists for any of the drawings - they certainly are not all Miyazaki. So if anyone knows who is who, holler.

I love Ponyo. I think there’s a lot going on drawing-wise and a good deal emotionally, beyond its reputation as super duper cute. by @imagepoisoning

From Drawing on Life (1996) by English illustrator Paul Hogarth (1917–2001). I’d seen some of the Graham Greene Penguin covers and thought of him as a sort of Pushpin-style guy, Glaser or even Saul Steinberg, only via the UK. Just has that British lumpy quality to the figures and faces, can’t explain it. The book has a ton of amazing drawings. by @imagepoisoning

More stuff from this art survey book (2vols) from 1962. Seeing everyone grappling with abstraction and how much to show or not to show. The guy with the cat is Charles Sheeler! This is a pretty scattershot group of details, I can provide artist/info for any one if you’re curious. And if you want the books, DM me, it’s cheap. by @imagepoisoning

Images and spreads from 2-volume survey from 1962: Art USA Now.

I look through it every now and then because it’s a weird mix of people and styles, and to my 21st-century-artschool-BFA eyes, the artist statements are enviably bonkers. The midcentury ‘plastic arts’ argot is fascinating. They can be obtuse, defensive, grandiose, impertinent, banal picture-plane shoptalk—and occasionally transcendent like the Larry Rivers statement in slide 12. by @imagepoisoning

Charles Burns collection from 1988 - RAW book published via Penguin.

I used to think this era of Burns was so different from the later work, but as I reacquaint myself with this one I see a lot more of the mutation-and-erosion stuff. The container stories and overall design are lower stakes, sort of quotational and poppy, but the drawings are still supercharged goth-sublime.

This one is sold - shout out to the adventurous customer who found it on the main page, it was originally posted over a year ago. 😮

About the size of normal hardcover, but more square and German, this is a single volume in Dieter Roth’s series collecting his life’s work. This is “Books and Graphics (part 2) and other stuff” - volume FORTY.

There will be others who know more about the man than I do, but to me his work is like Sailor’s snakeskin jacket from Wild at Heart: a representation of individuality and personal freedom. Strange doodles and silhouettes recur and haunt multiple pieces. Postcards or prints or earlier works are dismantled or sliced deli-thin to produce more art-confetti to throw all over the place. Scraps are left in drawers to marinate, and then retrieved and plopped somewhere on a stochastic basis eventually. The viewer gets a strong impression of a studio like a lab-kitchen-archive run by a madman just barely able to pretend to be normal, or only able to be normal in the weirdest way. by @imagepoisoning

Hardcover catalog (issued without dust jacket) from 1992 of the German painter Konrad Klapheck. Paintings from 1958 all the way through early 90s, in a barely-changing hard edged style.

He specializes in what feels to me like a kind of true abstraction: taking a form and redescribing it so oddly that you almost don’t recognize it. Meanwhile an ominous, uncanny overtone is at work. What is this weightless space these machines are populating? A painting of a tire will have a title like Die Macht des Vergessens (The Power of Oblivion). A drill press: Die Supermutter (The Supermother). Trippiness through sheer force of banal.

$25

About 70 pages, mostly color, in an LP-sized 12x12” format. The cover fabric has some charming blotches but it’s a strong copy. I’m always amazed by the quality of the reproductions in this. by @imagepoisoning

Late 80s/Early 90s surf rock/drag racing, and especially BEACH BOYS centric fanzine, in a very not-zine big softcover format. In a way kind of like those famous RE/SEARCH books - every page is packed with clippings and reviews and interviews—it feels like discovering a zillion entry blogspot on paper.

Photos from a latter day Brian Wilson studio session, a pretty good reprint of an amazing Alex Toth drag racing comic, obligatory Big Daddy Roth/Rat Fink section…this book is something else.

I’m selling this one cheap because the binding has a broken part (see later slides), get in touch if you’re interested. by @imagepoisoning

Brutalism survey megatome from 2018, with partial slipcover/wrap nestling a little softcover up with it. The obi is has a small tear but everything is in good condition otherwise. A truckload of Modern for the machine-for-living freaks out there.
