Today I want to DRAW what what might have looked like in the 1980s. This topic is close to my heart so I’m sharing some thoughts.

I want to draw this topic because this week I saw a lot of friends asking a chatbot to render an 80s image. While I know these are fun little blips on the timeline, I think we should take a community moment to be mindful of the trends we participate in, and what these quick harmless trends signify at scale.

Generative AI robs us of a lot of resources.

It takes clean drinking water to run data centers. The data centers then pollute their surrounding communities. If each of us runs a prompt that takes 16 oz of water to render, and billions of us throw that water away, we’re going to be in big trouble!

We hear a lot about water waste with Generative AI. Another precious resource I want to protect is human imagination.

Frankly I started this podcast because the idea of generative ai getting into kids hands made me feel deeply nauseatingly nervous. (And also I wanted to create an anxiety free space for developing minds to explore)

Let’s compare an AI trend to creating art:

1. You could pull the level of the chatbot slot machine, get a dopamine rush, and move on.

Or.
2. You draw a picture. You might not feel good at it and that might not feel good. You decide if your portrait wears eye shadow or teases her hair or has a mullet. You pick 80s outfits. You reminisce on the flawless styles on Cyndi Laupher and MC Hammer. You show your kids their music. Now they have a an idea, a picture of you growing up, and they have a memory of hearing “can’t touch this” for the first time. You dance.
Chatbots can’t get you dancing.

Just like we can decide which fashion trends we participate in, we can decide which online trends we participate in.
My suggestion is to slow down. Be mindful. Before you try an online trend, take a walk, write, read with the kids or just take 5 minutes of putting your phone down.

Create a buffer between temptation and dopamine.

And hey if we can give up CFCs (hairspray chemicals) to protect the ozone, we can give up AI rendering to save the planet and our water supply. by @imaginationdrawalong

Episode 50 is out today! This is a huge milestone and a fun moment of momentum.

It’s been a fun week on the podcast because today it episode 50 and earlier this week I published an episode based on a topic that an artist-listener sent in. I hope this will be the first of many listener pitches. Giraffes munching leaves in a tree 🌳 🦒

✨ My intention with this podcast was to captivate kiddos who love art and might need breaks from their anxiety. In this community I’ve also met:

💛 Parents and caretakers who want to see their resident artists sit down without a screen and be engaged in imagination (busy minds and busy hands at the same time!)
🧡 Older adults who appreciate calmly paced activity
🩷 Babies who zonk out immediately at the sound of my voice (lol, not offended, what a privilege)

Thank you to everyone who’s drawing with me! I am truly so thankful you’re here. Remember, there’s no wrong way to do art!

➡️ Share this with a friend who might appreciate a mellow drawing break this summer. 🎨 by @imaginationdrawalong

Imagination Draw Along is a low stimulation, screen free, drawing podcast for kids or anyone who wants to relax. Do you know any artists who want to draw along?
Each 10-15 minute episode keeps little hands and big imaginations busy, calm, and curious.
While artists follow along, I encourage them to make choices in their picture. This is a great way to build confidence because there’s no wrong way to do art!

Some artists like to repeat episodes and try new ideas and make new choices, and some artists like trying brand new episodes every Tuesday and Thursday.

Listen now on Apple Podcasts or anywhere you get podcasts. Or check out imaginationdrawalong.com to listen and share artwork!

Imagination Draw Along is an intentionally low-stim podcast for kids or anyone who likes to draw. I calmly guide artists through scenes like self portraits, castles, flying cars, and moments in history. The mellow pace encourages imagination wondering, builds confident decision making through artistic choice, and offers a light, fun mood. Keep the kids hands and minds busy for 10-15 minutes at a time without screens.

New episodes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning on Apple Podcasts or anywhere you get your podcasts. Click the link in the instagram bio or go to imaginationdrawalong.com
