I Was Taught How to Organize at Church, Imani Foster

“I was taught how to organize at church.” Imani Foster’s story is about what happens when faith, family, education, and Black Detroit community organizing become parts of the same practice. At 26, Foster carries lessons from parents who taught her that “good is not enough better is possible” and that meaningful work rarely happens overnight. Those lessons show up in her education justice organizing with 482 Forward, where work she began at 15 grew from witnessing Detroit’s school crisis firsthand at Renaissance High School, including teacher sickouts during emergency management. They also live in Hey Black Girl, the healing, empowerment, and yoga program she leads with Black girls at the Matrix Center near Six Mile and Gratiot. Foster challenges adults to stop deciding what young people need before listening to them, explaining that trust comes through consistency and creating spaces where youth can simply be. “I see people and I love people,” she says, connecting the leadership development she learned in church to the organizing she practices today. From Detroit public schools and educational inequity to children’s ministry, critical thinking, charter schools, and the lasting educational consequences of COVID, Foster asks what it truly means for every child to be served. Big. Day. Mayor Sheffield announced we have an entire team dedicated to Education and Youth Affairs. A keen focus, a citywide priority that will braid schools, after school, transportation, neighborhood planning, safety and all city services together all around youth. Youth as part of the process and centered in the work. Our goal? When anyone is asked “How are the children?” Each of us can answer “the children are well”. Go Detroit 🖤 by @imani_simonegb
