BOY RED SHADOW

There are no words to describe the horrific situation in northern Gaza right now. The territory is essentially a graveyard for children. No water, no access to healthcare. Mothers and their children are missing underneath the ruins of their city.

As a queer black woman, I know how important it is to feel seen, heard, and supported. No one is free until we are all free. I recognize my privilege as a Canadian citizen, and I will continue to use my voice and fight against injustice.

Continue to boycott, protest, write to elected representatives, and use your platform to share vital information regarding the current state of the crisis in Gaza.

For anyone with family who has been impacted - I’m praying for you religiously and I send you endless love.

This piece is titled BOY RED SHADOW after the installation by Abdul Rahman Katanani that inspired it. Katanani is a Palestinian artist and refugee, who uses “recycled materials to create narratives of his life in the camp” (Barakat 2023). Despite extenuating circumstances and the genesis of the material he uses to curate, Katanani is able to imagine pieces of great splendour that tell stories we don’t often hear. by @imanithepsalmist

Artist Spotlight: Imani Brown✨

Imani Brown is a writer who enjoys telling stories but fell in love with poetry once she discovered she liked delving into her feelings even more. Proudly published in The Continuist and looks forward to being featured in more publications. Graduating from Toronto Metropolitan University, her English degree stands as a cherished testament to her passion for writing.

At Flaunt It’s #LoveDimensions Magazine Launch Event Imani Brown read her piece, called “WHAT’S IN A CHAIN.” This piece painted a vivid picture of Imani’s journey as a black femme, revealing the profound challenges and reflections she faced along the way. Her reading brought to life the complexities of her experiences, shining a light on the societal expectations and pressures she navigated.

Imani’s reading left a lasting impression, inviting the audience to reflect on the complexities and challenges faced by black women in their quest for self-acceptance, empowerment, and the dismantling of oppressive systems. Her words sparked conversations and fostered a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences within the black community. 🗣️
