✨2026 NLI Fellow Spotlight: Imelda Carrasco (she/her/ella) is the Executive Director of Acción Latina, a San Francisco nonprofit reimagining what cultural arts and community media can look like when Latiné communities are at the center.

A first-generation daughter of Mexican immigrants raised in a family of creatives, Imelda developed a deep understanding of how traditions and stories are passed down through art and how those mediums carry the cultural weight of entire communities.

“What excites me most is the space itself — to learn, connect, grieve, and heal alongside other leaders. In a time of deep uncertainty, being in a room that holds space for all of that and walks away stronger is exactly where I need to be.”

Lightning in a Bottle was sooo cute ⚡️

It was nice to take some time off to dance. Music and dance have been one of the most healing outlets for me this past year. In complete gratitude that I was able to share this special moment with my brothers. May creator connect me to my siblings in every lifetime. by @imeldasf_

Last week, I ran into some of my Student Success Fund (SSF) girlies at a powerful @fiabayarea meeting advocating against the city’s harmful shelter eviction policy—fighting for “No more children living on the streets!”

It was incredible to see the SSF team show up in support without even coordinating, especially at one of the very schools that benefited from the fund. Being there with them reaffirmed our commitment to San Francisco students’ success—not just academically, but holistically.

As @hiyaleslie once taught me about the community schools approach: “You can’t teach a kid who is hungry.” Student success goes beyond the classroom—it’s about well-being (social, emotional, and basic needs). The SSF was created to support both academic success and student wellness, but how can we expect students to thrive when they’re unhoused or facing the trauma of potential eviction?

There’s no true student advocacy without fighting for their families, too. I encourage everyone to show up, speak out, and demand better for these families. Reach out to @fiabayarea and see how you can help.

It’s official! I’ve stepped into my role as Executive Director of Acción Latina—a journey that began years ago as a social media volunteer. Now, I have the honor of helping lead this organization alongside an amazing team.

This transition has been bittersweet. While I’m learning to celebrate this new opportunity, I’m also grieving the recent loss of my father. Balancing joy and sorrow hasn’t been easy, but I feel so lucky to have the support of my former team, my new team, and our outgoing ED, who has stayed on to guide me.

My parents, like so many immigrant families, gave everything to this country. I’m here to create the change our community deserves—to collect on generations of debt owed to our people. Not just in opportunity, but in power.

I carry my father’s hands now—calloused from giving, ready to receive what is owed.

Curaçao! I’m so happy I was able to take some time off and get away. I hadn’t taken any time off this year because I wanted to focus on my new job role, actively work on my mental health like it was a job (not sure how healthy that is), and the election. I did so many things and wore a lot of hats—it drained me, but I don’t think I would do anything differently.

It was hard leaving my team and the responsibilities of my role, and I couldn’t help feeling guilty for not spending the free time I was granted with my family. But taking this time off allowed me to recharge, reflect, and become a better person with the capacity to be there for both my team and my family. I know how much of a privilege it is to be able to do this, and I’ll be back soon, recharged and ready to join the fight and continue organizing once again! taken in Curaçao by @imeldasf_

•Día de los Muertos•

Cada año me gusta poner mi altar y comprar todas las cosas que les gustaban a mis familiares que han pasado al otro lado. En realidad, nunca celebré tanto el Día de los Muertos como lo he hecho desde que un familiar cercano a mí falleció hace unos cuantos años. Cada año espero la presencia de ese familiar; compro marranitos, pongo café, galletas de animalitos y todo lo que puedo para cumplir con mi parte de la ceremonia, incluso pintándome. Como maquillista, siempre me ha gustado expresarme a través de mi arte, y en el Día de los Muertos, a mis hermanas y a mí nos gusta esta parte de la celebración. Siento que si hago todo lo que me corresponde, incluyendo pintarme, entonces mi premio será estar con mis familiares.
