This Chicano Heritage Month, I urge you all to remember our history.

On August 29, 1970 thousands of Chicanos gathered in East Los Angeles for the National Chicano Moratorium, protesting the Vietnam War and the disproportionate number of Mexican American men being sent to fight and die.

The demonstration was peaceful till LAPD showed up and swarmed our community with tear gas. Hundreds arrested leaving many injured but 3 people were murdered in broad daylight.

🕊️ Rubén Salazar — the Los Angeles Times journalist and KMEX news director was inside the Silver Dollar Café when an L.A. County Sheriff's deputy fired a tear-gas projectile into the building. It struck Salazar in the head and killed him.

🕊️ Angel Diaz — 35 years old. During the chaos, Diaz was attempting to get away when deputies opened fire. He was critically injured and later died from those injuries.

🕊️ Lynn Ward — only 15 years old and serving as a Brown Beret medic. He was caught in an explosion during the violence and suffered devastating injuries. He later died from those injuries. A 15-year-old was among the lives lost that day.

Now, 56 years later, we continue to remember the people who stood up, spoke out, and demanded that Chicano lives be valued.

When we come together to serve our people, we remind each other that no one should be left behind. Huge respect to our comrades @tppsandiego for organizing a Medical Kit Building Day to support their homeless medical program.

If you’re able to volunteer to help assemble kits, or donate just know your efforts can make a real difference for someone in need. Every bandage packed, every supply donated, and every hand that shows up is an act of solidarity.

Let’s continue building stronger communities through compassion, mutual aid, and collective action.

In the middle of everything happening around us, it’s easy to forget that children are taking it all in too. They hear the conversations. They see the fear, the sadness, the uncertainty even when we think they’re not paying attention. If these moments can take a mental and emotional toll on adults, imagine what they can feel like through the eyes of a child. That’s why it’s so important to have age-appropriate conversations with the younger generation. Teach them their rights. Help them understand what’s happening without creating more fear. Let them know they are loved, supported, and that there are safe adults they can turn to.

Kindness, patience, and honest conversations can make a lasting difference. Healing starts with how we care for one another especially our children.

If landlords require tenants to earn 3x the monthly rent just to qualify... Why aren't jobs paying 3x the cost of rent?

Housing is a basic necessity, yet many hardworking people are priced out-not because they don't work, but because wages haven't kept up with the cost of living. If someone works full-time, they should have a fair opportunity to afford a safe place to live.

It's a question worth asking:
If the standard is 3x the rent, why isn't that the standard for pay?

Let’s stop shifting the conversation toward protecting a man’s ego when a woman is fighting for her safety, her reputation, her voice, or her life. Women are facing violence and #femicide, and somehow people still want to center the feelings of the person who caused harm.

Being rejected is not an excuse.
Being angry is not an excuse.
Being embarrassed is not an excuse.

A woman is not responsible for managing a man’s emotions at the cost of her own safety. by @imenz213

Nixon Giovanni Pérez Paz.
Glendy Marisol González de la Cruz.

They were more than a headline. They were a husband and wife. They were parents. They were human beings.

After returning to Guatemala, Nixon and Glendy were found bound and shot to death in a sugar cane field. Beside them was their 14-month-old daughter, crying for the parents who would never answer her again. Authorities in Guatemala are investigating the killings.

No matter where we stand on immigration policy, no family should endure a tragedy like this. Their daughter now carries a loss that no child should ever have to experience.

We must remember that behind every statistic, every debate, and every headline are real people with names, families, and lives.
