2026-09-19: made my Broadway conducting debut last night at @mincemeatbway !! feeling unbelievably lucky and grateful to make theatre with such dreamboats — I am in awe of everyone bringing this show to life at the Golden, and am honored to be a small part of that magic :)

FESTIVAL SPOTLIGHT: The Crossroads 🥢✨

Shouting out another exciting new work featured at the Canadian Festival of New Musicals!

After the disastrous opening day of his Toronto Chinatown restaurant, Kevin discovers an old family recipe from his late father, a soup made with extra-spicy Szechuan peppercorns, labeled “For Emergencies Only.” When he tastes it, everything changes. Kevin is transported to The Crossroads, a metaphysical realm where he can see the outcomes of his decisions before he has to make them.

Armed with the ability to know what comes next, Kevin embarks upon a campaign to save his restaurant, uphold his father’s legacy, and preserve the identity of his community — ultimately learning not just what it takes to keep a restaurant afloat, but also how our decisions, and, perhaps more importantly, our regrets, shape the people we become.

@smashbway is HERE!!

If you had told me, two years ago, that I’d be working on SMASH three months after graduating from college, I wouldn’t have believed you. How lucky am I to have @marc_shaiman and @scottwittman ’s iconic, unforgettable score be part of (essentially) my entire chapter since moving to NYC — they say not to meet your heroes, but boy oh boy were they wrong. To have been a small part of bringing this incredible score to life is nothing short of a dream.

Special shoutout to our music corner — Paul, Charity, and Sean — whose support (and laughs) I will miss dearly. And among the innumerable thank yous to the big village that made this big Broadway show… I owe it all to @steoremus , who took a chance on me (out of the blue!) many moons ago and championed me through every reading, workshop, and rehearsal; and to @samtahoad , who was my (and everyone’s) rock throughout this entire process and whose integrity — both as a musician and as a human — made this show what it is now.

could not imagine a better way to close out 22 than @walkonthroughmusical at @mcctheater — i am so honored to be part of a show that so earnestly celebrates what it means to be an artist, a maker, and a human. @realgavincreel, thank you for birthing this profound, inspiring, and heartwarming piece into the world.

each and every person on this production has been nothing short of the utmost joy to work with. i am grateful beyond words for the most beautiful (inside and out) music team EVER — madeline, @chrispetersmusic, @swasserm and @coreyrawls — who took me under their wing, encouraged me to find my own voice as a musician, and showed (by formidable example) together what it means to make art with kindness at the fore. how lucky i am to have you as my friends.

tl;dr: you can’t spell “he’s finally graduating” without the letters in “ian is grateful” :)

A few weeks ago, I graduated from Harvard with a B.A. in Linguistics & Mathematics (peep the last photo for Ian the 7-year-old prophet), a secondary field in Music, and a M.A. in Linguistics! As disparate as those fields might sound, I got to write a senior thesis combining them all: By quantitatively investigating how lexical tone in Cantonese and Mandarin manifests across melodic intervals in Chinese pop, I was able to relive my pre-teen, Voice-of-China-loving years — and so I am incredibly heartwarmed to have received highest honours on research this personally meaningful.

I am so lucky to have grown in countless soul-enriching ways at Harvard. I’ve loved music my whole life, but Harvard arts let me find and make a home in it. In fact, I almost literally found my voice here (nearly lost it each semester, too) singing in every group I could find. Making music in UChoir, Collegium, VoxJazz, and the Din & Tonics has left an indelible impression on what it means for me to be an artist and a community member.

Even more, I was fortunate enough to discover musical theater here at Harvard; in 2018, I barely knew what a musical was! Yet somehow, in these 5 years, I wrote 4 musicals (and orchestrated them too, plus 3 more), music directed 13 productions, and got my Broadway debut. I’ve worked with some of the most formidable artistic forces I know; rediscovered my love for the piano, for writing music, and for conducting it; and — perhaps for the first time ever — found a real, personal passion and purpose: in telling stories that represent, empower, and advocate for people who look and who are like me.

What a privilege it has been to meet the incredible people I have met here. Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me into their orbit — I have learnt so much from every one of you, and I sincerely hope we (continue to) cross paths beyond Harvard.

What comes next? I’ll be in NYC for (at least) the next year, hopefully working on the next generation of new musicals :) come say hi if you’re in town — or, if you’re not, shoot me a message! Sending hugs, and see you soon <3 taken in Harvard University by @imianchan_

what i adore most about theater is that, by its very nature, it encourages — demands — collaboration and community. that we all become small but important cogs that turn together to make the thing happen.

and so to think that such a community was able to form around the story that only existed, for months, in the collective imagination of kalos, juhye, and me, is a privilege beyond words. i will never be able to express how grateful i am to know that nearly 100 people believed enough in this project to make it a part of their lives this semester.

to our beautiful orchestra — thank you for creating and imbuing my music with more energy and life than I could ever hoped. to our intrepid cast — thank you for approaching these songs with so much love and care, and for adding your incredible selves to them. to our fearless staff — thank you for navigating all the moving pieces of this wild production so smoothly.

and some extra special thank yous: to @angelandtheangry_ , for taking us from beginning to end with endlessly graceful leadership; to @stephanie.kaiser and @julia__grullon , for keeping me in check and spearheading our rehearsal team so elegantly; to @easton.singer , for being the most patient and generous orchestra manager I could have ever imagined; to @clyxfrd , for literally putting together the rhythmic backbone for this show; to @caronkim and @jenniferchu_ , for providing mind-shatteringly profound movement to these songs; to Anna, for making the entire visual landscape of OUT as gorgeous as it was…

and to @kaloschu and @juhye.m : i joke sometimes that i compose because it is so much more brave to write the words. thank you for being the ones to articulate this story, and thank you for believing in my music as a vehicle to tell it. to have known you and grow with you these five years is already the honor of a lifetime — to have written a musical alongside you is the (really, really special) cherry on top.

Come see OUT: An Asian American Musical this weekend :)

It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to work with @kaloschu and @juhye.m and write this show that is so close to all of our hearts. To think that my Harvard theater chapter is coming to an end leaves me beyond words, and there is no other team that I'd rather share this experience with.
