Green Fungus on Your Shrimp? Here’s What You Need to Know!

🦐 Ellobiopsidae “Green Fungus” on Shrimp — Care & Treatment

Have you ever noticed a green, fuzzy growth developing underneath your shrimp? It may be Ellobiopsidae, commonly referred to as “green fungus.” In freshwater shrimp, this condition is associated with a parasitic green alga called Cladogonium.

In this video, we’ll cover:
🦐 What causes Ellobiopsidae
🔍 How to recognize the symptoms
💧 Why maintaining excellent water quality matters
🏠 Why affected shrimp should be quarantined
🌿 How tannins and Indian almond leaves may support recovery

This condition is most commonly reported in Neocaridina shrimp. Caridina shrimp appear highly unlikely to contract this specific parasitic alga, although aquarium disease identification can be difficult and reports are limited.

🐌 Tiny Snail, Big Surprise!

🐌 RAMSHORN SNAIL SIZE DOESN’T MATTER WHEN IT COMES TO BREEDING! 🐌

One thing that surprises many aquarium keepers is how quickly Ramshorn snails can begin reproducing. Unlike Mystery Snails, their breeding maturity isn’t necessarily tied to becoming large.

🌀 Ramshorn Snails:
They can reach sexual maturity at roughly 1 month old, depending on species and conditions. Because they are hermaphroditic, a single snail can potentially reproduce after mating and some individuals can even self-fertilize.

🐌 Mystery Snails:
They take considerably longer to mature, typically around 5–6 months or older, and they need to reach sexual maturity before breeding. Unlike Ramshorns, Mystery Snails have separate males and females.

So that tiny Ramshorn crawling around your aquarium? 👀

STOP! Your Aquarium Rocks Are Doing More Than You Think!

🪨🐠 Top 5 Aquarium Rocks & Their Benefits!

Did you know aquarium rocks can be more than just decoration? They can create a natural looking aquascape, provide hiding places, create territories, and offer surfaces where beneficial bacteria can colonize as part of your aquarium’s biological filtration.

🪨 1. Dragon Stone — Lightweight, highly textured, and full of crevices that create a natural appearance and extra surface area for beneficial bacteria.

🌋 2. Lava Rock — Porous and lightweight, providing lots of surface area for beneficial bacteria while creating a rugged natural look.

⛰️ 3. Seiryu Stone — Known for its dramatic texture and beautiful blue-gray appearance, making it popular for creating striking aquascapes. Keep in mind that it can affect water hardness and pH.

🪨 4. Slate — Flat, layered, and versatile. Great for creating caves, ledges, terraces, and natural-looking structures.

🪨 5. Granite — Durable and attractive, with a generally inert composition that makes it useful for creating stable hardscape structures.

💡 Remember: The rocks themselves don’t “filter” your aquarium. Their surfaces provide places for beneficial bacteria to grow, which help process ammonia and nitrite as part of the nitrogen cycle.

Always make sure your rocks are aquarium safe, properly cleaned, and compatible with your fish, shrimp, snails, and water parameters.

Mystery Snails Eggs Clutches Hatching Naturally 🥚🐌

🐌🦐 LET NATURE DO THE WORK! 🌿💧

Ever wondered how Mystery Snail babies can hatch naturally right inside your aquarium? 👀

When Mystery Snails lay their egg clutch, they usually attach it above the waterline, often right on the aquarium glass. Instead of removing the clutch, I like to let nature take its course.

💧 Humidity is the key! The moisture and humidity inside the tank help keep the clutch from drying out. In my setup, the gentle mist and humidity created by the bubble filter/aeration help maintain the moisture around the eggs without submerging them.

🐣 After developing, the tiny Mystery Snails eventually hatch and make their way down into the aquarium. No incubator. No complicated setup. Just the right environment and a little patience!

🦐 And one of my favorite parts? Watching these tiny snails grow alongside baby Neocaridina shrimp. They can peacefully share the same aquarium, with the shrimp constantly exploring while the baby snails cruise around looking for food.

🌱 The goal is simple: stable water parameters, plenty of biofilm and food, calcium availability, and a healthy established aquarium.

Nature can be pretty amazing when we give it the right environment. 🐌❤️🦐

🐌🥒 Mystery Snail Feast! 🥕🌿

Want to spoil your mystery snails? These little cleanup crew members LOVE a good veggie buffet! 😍

🥒 Zucchini & yellow squash — soft, easy to eat, and a favorite
🫘 Green beans — a nutritious snack they’ll happily graze on
🥬 Kale & collard greens — packed with beneficial nutrients
🥕 Carrots & sweet potato — cook until soft so your snails can easily rasp away

💡 Pro tip: Blanch or steam fresh veggies for 2–5 minutes, cool them before adding them to the tank, and remove leftovers within 24 hours.

And don’t forget calcium! 🐚 A good calcium source helps mystery snails maintain strong, healthy shells.

🐠 Betta Tank Mates That Actually Make Sense! 🌿

Think a betta has to live alone? Not necessarily! 👀 The right tank mates can create an amazing, peaceful community when the aquarium is properly sized, planted, and everyone’s temperament is compatible.

⭐ 5 of my favorite betta-friendly options:

🐟 Pygmy Corydoras — Tiny, peaceful bottom-dwellers that love staying in a school of 6+.

🐍 Kuhli Loaches — Shy, nocturnal “water noodles” that spend most of their time exploring the substrate.

🐠 Harlequin Rasboras — Active schooling swimmers that occupy the mid-to-upper levels. Keep 6+.

🐌 Mystery Snails — Peaceful, larger snails with sturdy shells that can handle a curious betta better than many smaller snails.

🦐 Amano Shrimp — Larger and more robust than many dwarf shrimp, while helping clean up leftover food and algae.

⚠️ Remember: No tank mate is guaranteed to work with every betta. Personality matters, so always monitor interactions closely.
