Dear Queen Mother,

Gorée Island & the "Door of no return." The experience was too emotional/powerful to put in words...

Gorée Island is a small, 45-acre volcanic island located just off the coast of Dakar, Senegal. It is universally recognized as a powerful symbol of the transatlantic slave trade and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978.

The Slave Trade Hub: From the 15th to the 19th centuries, the island was a strategic outpost ruled successively by the Portuguese, Dutch, English, and French. It served as a central warehouse and commercial point where captured Africans were held in cramped, horrific conditions before being shipped across the Atlantic.

The House of Slaves & "Door of No Return": The island’s most famous landmark is the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves). It features the haunting "Door of No Return," a seaside portal where enslaved individuals took their final steps on African soil before boarding slave ships.

Contrasting Architecture: The island is characterized by a stark visual contrast: the elegant, brightly colored colonial mansions of European slave traders sit directly above the grim, dark dungeons where the captives were chained.

Gorée Today: Today, the island has been transformed into a sanctuary of reconciliation and remembrance.
