HI FRIENDS!!! 👋

We have a few new friends here so I thought I'd share some fun get-to-know me facts:

📚 I built Lisa's Study Guides (now renamed The Learning Hive Academy) in my 20s. It's been one of the most rewarding but challenging journeys, from tutoring solo to eventually building a tutoring team and teaching thousands of students!

🙋🏻‍♀️ I'm a Melbournian who moved to London in 2024 to level up my life EXP! After selling my tutoring business, I wanted a new challenge, to grow Tutorboss overseas and explore more of the world.

🇨🇳🇻🇳 I'm Chinese/Viet. Fun fact: English is my 4th language! I speak Cantonese at home with my mum, studied Mandarin at school, and grew up hearing Vietnamese from my dad. The logic? That's probably for another story 😂

👩‍🏫 I love teaching. I started tutoring English, Maths and Chemistry at 18 with no experience. 15 years later, I'm coaching tutoring businesses around the world! My strength is in team leadership and building efficient systems so you can step into your CEO role.

✨ I'm an ENTJ, Enneagram 3 and Projector. I used to be 93% extroverted, though that number has gone down to about 80% (soooo still pretty extroverted 😅). My cup is filled when I spend quality time with loved ones and have meaningful conversations.

📚 I also love learning (what a nerd)! My fav books are: 4000 Weeks, Stolen Focus, and Crucial Conversations. I even have my own singing tutor because yes, I really believe in what tutors do 😂

💛 I'm a big believer in building a sustainable business that's aligned with you and your lifestyle. I'm a recovering overachiever and I now focus on slowing down and intentionally creating a business and life that brings me joy and fulfillment (lots of socials, pickleball, singing, travelling). I'd much rather enjoy the journey than only live for the destination.

You can do the math perfectly and still not see the money land, which is honestly disrespectful 😅

You can charge premium rates, have parents who trust you, and still look at your calendar like… why is this so inconsistent? One week you’re booked out and thriving, the next week it’s crickets and you’re checking your notifications like you missed something 🙃

And let’s be real, it’s usually not your pricing or your skills. You’re good at what you do. The issue is premium clients don’t automatically show up just because you’re excellent.

Most tutors don’t have a clear, repeatable way to attract the right leads and guide the DM conversation toward a confident yes, so income ends up feeling like a guessing game.

What changed everything for me (and my clients) was learning how to sell in the DMs like a normal human. It feels natural, it’s not awkward or pushy, and it doesn’t require being on your phone 24/7 like you’re in a toxic situationship with Instagram 🫠

If you want $10k months to feel normal (not theoretical), you need a system that works even when you’re busy teaching.

I did my first in person speech in the UK and I loved every single minute of it!

Packed room of 100+ people in the tutoring industry, all there to learn ‘How to hire your dream tutoring team’ - based on my experiences of hiring 100+ tutors over the past 10 years.

It was so heartwarming meeting everyone at the @tutorsassoc conference last week, and to learn that so many of you had used my content to help you grow your businesses 😍

And a special thanks to @_thattutor for taking care of me throughout the day. She knew I was still recovering from a cold so brought me orange juice and so much more (I was really worried I’d start having a coughing fit mid-speech).

If there is one thing I learnt for sure, it’s that community and connection is so powerful, and grateful to be part of TTA.

If there’s a second thing I confirmed, it’s that I love presenting and I can’t wait to do more!

Picture this: Ten tutors. $80 an hour. Ten hours a week each.
That's $32,000 a month, without you teaching a single hour of it. 😉

Sounds too good to be true? I promise it's not. You just have to plan for it properly.

I used to do it wrong for many years while scaling LSG, too. I waited until I was already drowning, then threw a tutor in with a login and a vague brief and hoped for the best. Two weeks later, a parent would mention the sessions felt a bit off, and I'd panic and take those lessons back myself. That meant I was straight back to a full teaching week. 🫠

And I get it, "it's just easier if I do it" feels like the most efficient thing you can do in that moment.
What it's actually doing is capping your revenue at the hours on your own calendar. Forever.

And the first step out of this is DELEGATION. And it only works when your tutors know exactly what "good" looks like, how they'll be evaluated, and what happens when something slips.

So I hosted a Claude party with my friends 😅

Everyone showed up thinking they were the only one using it a certain way, and left with a few new ideas they hadn't thought of before. This was way more fun (and insightful) than I thought it was going to be!

If you've been using AI for one thing (emails, maybe) and have no idea what else it could do, this is your sign to throw your own Claude knowledge-sharing party. Invite a few friends, share ideas on how you usually use these tools, and you might just learn a thing or two!

I almost didn't make this hire. 👀
But thank goodness I did... because it completely changed the trajectory of my business.

As a tutoring business owner, hiring an admin never felt like something I could justify.

I mean, tutors bring in money directly. Admin doesn't. So on paper, it just looked like a cost I shouldn't be spending on. 🫠

But as I scaled Lisa's Study Guides, I was drowning.
I was personally juggling EVERY single task on my own.

Working 80-hour work weeks. Never taking a day off. Just trying to keep up with both managing the day-to-day operations WHILE leading the business.

So I decided, "screw it," and hired Simone to run my admin.
And the moment she took over scheduling, parent comms, and invoicing? Boy, everything shifted for me. 🥹

I could finally put real attention on the things I'd been putting off... like marketing. Partnerships.

The things that actually let me work ON the business, instead of just sprinting around inside it.

"I'm fine. I'm FINE!" 🫠

Except you're on your fourth coffee, it's 10pm, and you're squinting at your inbox wondering if you actually replied to that parent or just *thought* about replying.

Ohh, I know these growing pains all too well. 😅

Back when I was scaling Lisa's Study Guides, I was the decision maker for absolutely EVERYTHING. How to close the next lead. How to handle that parent complaint. Sorting out scheduling. Sitting in on tutor sessions "just to check."

I thought that I was being a dedicated business owner.
But really? I was just a very tired manager. 🙈

So if you're currently in this exact spot, here's a lil advice...
As your tutoring business grows, you have to learn to LEAD a business. Not just MANAGE a team of tutors.

That means...
🌟 Building systems (across sales, delivery, team, etc) that let things run without you as the bottleneck
🌟 Stepping away from the day-to-day and focusing on actually scaling the business
🌟 Delegating with proper systems in place, so your standards hold even when you're not in the room

I had 25 tutors and I was STILL sitting in on sessions to check quality. (not my proudest era) 😅

Not because I didn't trust them. Because I'd never actually built the thing that would let me stop.

The business had grown. My role hadn't. And I didn't realise how stuck I was until I was exhausted, resentful, and wondering why having a team somehow made things feel harder - not easier.

That's the manager trap. And the way out isn't working harder or hiring more people. It's rebuilding how you operate.

Start with this: write down every decision you made this week and circle the ones that didn't actually need to be yours. (that list will humble you) That's your delegation starting point.

Then block ONE morning a week for strategy only.
Not parent emails. Not session check-ins. STRATEGY.
Because if your week looks exactly like your tutors' weeks, the CEO role hasn't been built yet.

And start tracking the numbers that actually tell you how the business is running - revenue per tutor, student retention, lead conversion. If you don't know them off the top of your head right now, that's the first gap to close.
