Don’t miss ‘Salarium’, by Ruth E Lyons. ‘Salarium’ includes an outdoor screening of Lyon's debut film 'The Sea Inside Us' (2025) alongside a performance of the film’s score and an artist-led children’s workshop.

To celebrate Trans and Intersex Pride Week, join ShoutOut and special guests for ‘Trans Pride: Visions’, an evening exploring the agency and power of performance in bringing trans stories to life.

As part of Dublin by Dusk, join us for ‘Making Irelands’, an insightful film screening and in-conversation event with artists Marianne Keating and Yvonne McGuinness.

Take part in Turbante-se, a hands-on workshop exploring the history and everyday practice of headwraps across Afro-Atlantic cultures.

This month also sees the launch of our new Quiet Sessions. On the last Wednesday of each month, the gallery will open from 10am–11.30am in a calm, supportive environment for neurodivergent visitors and anyone looking for a quieter museum experience. Enjoy ‘Art as Agency’ at your own pace, with gallery staff on hand to support.

Across the month, visitors can also join our In the Moment art and mindfulness workshops, Gelli plate monoprinting for kids, Dwell Here Open Studios, Biodiversity tours of the IMMA grounds, Yoga, and Music in the Courtyard.

Sheena Barrett, our Head of Research and Learning at IMMA, recently spoke with the 'Business Post' about her personal highlight from our exhibition IMMA Collection: Art As Agency, choosing the work 'Woman in the Well (1996)' by artist Joan Jonas.

“It is always difficult to pick a favourite artwork. Context is forever shifting, shaped by mood, the weather, layers of information and memory. This fluidity is what drew me to Woman in the Well by the American artist Joan Jonas, whose work I first encountered at the Venice Biennale.

"It was while on residency at IMMA that Jonas was introduced to the work of poet Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill. Specifically, she encountered a translation of an ancient poem about Mís, a woman driven to madness by the brutal death of her father.

"In the myth, Mís took revenge by sucking the blood from any creature she met, until she was transformed by the music of the harpist, Dubh Ruis.
In Jonas’s installation, Mís is glimpsed at the bottom of a well, surrounded by mirrors that offer the viewer fragmented reflections and perspectives"

IMMA is delighted to collaborate with GAZE International LGBTQIA Film Festival to present four films from their 2026 programme on Living Canvas at IMMA.

Taking place at IMMA from 31 July to 3 August, the programme brings together films with roots in Ireland, Argentina, Germany, the US, Taiwan and Colombia, offering a dynamic, kaleidoscopic snapshot of contemporary queer filmmaking. See more details below.

Drawing inspiration from the imperial 1896 German Colonial Exhibition where 106 people from Africa and Oceania were displayed as living exhibits, this film transforms the machinery of photographic representation into an act of defiance – a cinematic hymn to those who refused to be captured.

Join us for our new Quiet Sessions in the Gallery, taking place on the last Wednesday of every month. From 10-11.30am we are offering a calm and supportive environment for neurodivergent visitors and anyone seeking a quieter museum space. Visitors are invited to enjoy our current exhibition Art as Agency at their own pace, with gallery staff on hand to provide support if needed.

Our next Quiet session will take place on Wednesday 29 July from 10-11.30am. These sessions are free, advanced booking is required to help us maintain a comfortable environment for all attendees.

We’re delighted to be part of this year’s Liberties Festival, presenting a special programme of films on Living Canvas at IMMA from 23-26 July.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬, 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟖–𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔
Created by artists Gary Gowran and Sadhbh Lawlor in collaboration with facilitator Joanie Whyte and RCDT’s family support group Step by Step, ‘The Blocks’ is a series of animated short films exploring the generational impact and hidden harm of addiction on family life. The films follow Sissy, born in Dublin in the 1950s, from childhood in the tenements and a new block of flats to adulthood and parenthood in Rialto, as she navigates responsibilities, expectations and challenges for which she and her community have had little time or opportunity to prepare.

𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓
Emma Murphy highlights sites of dereliction in Dublin’s inner city, reconstructing neglected sites such as Iveagh Market, Ormond Quay and Cork Street using photogrammetry and 3D modelling. Presented as a virtual fly-through, it is accompanied by an audio cityscape produced from on-site field recordings.

𝐄𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓
Friederike Jaich invites audiences to experience Dublin through listening, asking what can be understood about urban change when we pay attention to the sounds that surround us. Combining observational cinematography with immersive field recordings, the work explores how redevelopment reshapes not only the physical city but also its sonic identity.

Marianne Keating’s ‘Cad Leis a Bhfuilimíd Ailínithe / To What Do We Align’ (2025) examines Ireland’s place within global anti-colonial movements, reflecting on the country’s shifting political identity through a rich collage of archival footage. Yvonne McGuinness’ ‘What’s Left Us Then’ (2023), showing in Dublin for the first time, offers a poetic meditation on the traces of concrete in the rural Irish landscape, exploring the intersections of architecture, memory, and belonging. Both films will continue to screen on Living Canvas at IMMA until 13 August.

Have you ever wondered what a museum conservator does? Watch @letiziamarcattili for a behind the scenes look at a day in the life of a conservator at IMMA as she works on artworks currently displayed in our ‘IMMA Collection, Art as Agency exhibition.

Art as Agency’ is a major three-year display celebrating IMMA’s Permanent Collection. Featuring over 100 artists such as Jack Butler Yeats, Patricia Hurl and Marcel Duchamp, this is an exhibition not to be missed.

There are still a few days left to see Tarek Atoui: Sunflowers at IMMA before the exhibition closes this Sunday, 19 July.

Tarek Atoui is a Lebanese sound artist and composer based in Paris known for his innovative approach to sound, performance, and instrument-making. His work explores the physicality of sound and the act of listening, creating immersive experiences that challenge traditional boundaries between artist, audience, and instrument. Atoui frequently collaborates with musicians, instrument makers, and people with diverse hearing abilities, emphasising inclusivity and experimentation.

In the gallery spaces Atoui’s works Sunflowers are influenced by Korean drumming tradition, the spaces are designed as both listening space and places for the audience to make their own material through workshops. Atoui’s work plays with improvisation, activation and listening that immerses the audiences in unprecedented sensory and cognitive experiences. His work opens up new channels of imagination and knowledge that are challenging and embrace experimentation.

In June, we were thrilled to run IMMA’s second 2026 Dwell Here Residency, hosting four new short stay residents: Jaana Kokko, Shivanjani Lal, Lorena Moreno Vera, and Roots Collective (Sinead Curran, Eileen Hutton, Vanya Lambrecht Ward, Rosie O’Reilly, and Maeve Stone).

They joined us for practice-based research alongside IMMA’s six one-year residents, Addoley Dzegede, Glenn Loughran, Samir Mahmood, Paul O’Brien, Atoosa Pour Hosseini, Paul O’Brien, and Xiao Zhiyu.

During the assembly residents enjoyed scroll painting, screenings, a trip to meet OPW Stonemasons at Áras an Uactaráin, a visit to the incredible Folklore Collection at UCD with the expert guidance of Jonny Dillon and so much more. Many residents captured their research through print projects such as Addoley Dzegede who made beautiful exercise copies replicating those found in the Folklore Collection at UCD. This assembly process is expansive and continues to give in abundance.

Children and grown-ups are invited to take part in a hands-on sculptural carving workshop led by artist Ruth E Lyons. Using simple tools, participants will carve marine-inspired forms from bars of soap and explore the tactile process of polishing crystalline rock salt. IMMA is proud to be one of the supporting venues for Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union taking place from July to December 2026. IMMA’s event spaces in the historic North Wing will support the official Presidency activities and related events throughout the period.

As part of Cultúr 2026, Ireland's national cultural programme for the Presidency, IMMA presents a series of major projects that reflect the richness of contemporary artistic practice and the role of culture in fostering dialogue, understanding, and exchange across Europe.

Through exhibitions, research, public engagement, and international collaboration, IMMA's programme contributes to the wider ambitions of Cultúr 2026, showcasing contemporary Irish artistic excellence while exploring themes of identity, memory, democracy, and cultural connection that resonate across contemporary Europe.

IMMA’s programme presents a major exhibition, ‘Technologies of Peace: Art and Transition in Contemporary Europe (1989-2026)’ opening on 12 September. This landmark exhibition explores how artists have responded to conflict, transition, and peacebuilding across Europe since 1989. An international conference and publication accompanies the exhibition.

The IMMA Collection presents two off-site exhibitions – ‘Encounters: IMMA Collection at Dublin Castle’ showcasing over 40 artworks at Dublin Castle that is available for delegates to view from 1 July and will be open to the public from 1 – 30 January 2027. The second exhibition, ‘Portrait of an Irish Collector,’ is presented at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris, and showcases 60 photographs from the Collection of Dr David Kronn opening on 12 November.

IMMA’s programme is supported by Culture Ireland the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.

Please note IMMA will remain open throughout the EU Presidency.
