What an incredible day at the Victoria Embankment Gardens!

A massive thank you to everyone who took part, performed, volunteered, and came out to support us on ‘International Youth Day’.

Thanks to your amazing efforts with our recycling teams, the plastic waste collected on site was enough to power all of our live workshops throughout the day, and we still have three full bags of recyclable plastic left over! ♻️✨

What’s Next?
The remaining plastic waste won’t go to waste! It is being repurposed into a custom Art Installation that we hope to formally exhibit this coming September. Stay tuned to our socials for updates on the venue and launch date!

Thank you all again for your incredible contributions, energy, and ongoing support to make our community greener and more creative! 🙌💚

@realrvw #13: Climate justice and Colonial Reparations | Page59 - by Darcy Thomas (available at the @tate bookshop)

“One of the greatest finds for me whilst writing this was the fact most of us were taught geography in school using a map that was created to reflect flat earth. Which meant that countries and continents true dimensions and sizes were distorted and made to look smaller OR larger than they actually are. This is why Russia seems bigger than Africa. When in fact Africa is 1.77 times larger. The colonial lens has distorted the vision of people across the globe for so long and in my view has contributed to some of our warped perspectives of ourselves and our motherlands. According to climate clock we have less than 7 years to change how we live and save our planet.

If we are to understand how we have been tricked into ruining our own planet in order to make the slave masters more and more money… We must look back to move forward. @j_self has gracefully placed a timeline of crucial events within my article (slide 5) to give you better understanding of our history.

Previous writers include @aiww, @virgilabloh, @studioolafureliasson, @extinctionrebellion and many many more. To be asked to pen my views and opinions on such an amazing subject and to be placed amongst this cohort of pioneers and great thinkers is a true life goal and I’m super grateful to have been asked to contribute.

This is my first published article of the year and also my last project of the 2022… and it is such an honour to be featured in this magazine.”

(Since writing this article the map has now been changed but the climate clock still ticks..)

‘Father-In The Hood’

Now more fitting for Father’s Day: I made a poem as a guide to being a good father for my son, and for anyone else who needs it. I hope it helps ❤️

To be a good father you must follow the four P’s:

PREPARE
Being prepared for every eventuality
Whilst being present enough to see your reality.
(Preparing for your future / Listening to you {and your mother} so I can hear what I must install as the positive masculine energy in your life to emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually train you to achieve your own dreams and live a happy, wholesome life.)

PROVIDE
Providing food/water/clothes, providing a support structure, providing for your healthy living habits, providing for your future, providing tools to create a positive mindset/self-esteem, providing positive mental stimulus, providing outlets for your art/voice, providing lessons to physically, mentally and emotionally prepare you for the world.
(Taking you on outings to art exhibitions, watching live musicians and bands, playing instruments, reading to you, painting/drawing with you, teaching you creative writing, being in nature with you, playing competitive sports, showing you how to love by loving you and your mother unconditionally.)

PROTECT
Protecting you from anything / anyone which may cause you harm.
(This protection policy covers - Mental, physical or spiritual harm. And this insurance covers you for a lifetime.)

Lastly, you must be PRESENT

Even if you cannot give them all of your time, always remain available for your family in all circumstances.
Availability of the father makes the house complete in its own set up (separated or not). A complete house is more loving, and stays in confined peace and harmony. It does not cost you a penny to spare time for the family - despite relationship issues / OR busy schedules, always remain available for the family.

Disclaimer: It’s the most important job of your life, that you learn on the job and if you fuck it up someone can actually die…

The irony is, being a good parent means learning how to get out of the way, whilst being on call 24 hours a day. taken in Planet Earth by @immrdarcy

I reported for Dispatches, in this bafta winning episode we looked at trainers, recycling, consumerism and green washing. This program changed the legislation around greenwashing in 2022.

Food for thought:
“My culture and community… the black community heavily uses the phrase “drip or drown” when describing fashion. The irony is, it is our drip that is making our planet drown.

The system is also set so it is our native lands which suffer from it the most.”

In my latest piece for Music Week, I dive into how climate mitigation can transform the UK music industry. From our "no cash, just trash" model at UK Youth Day to centering Global Majority leadership in green tech and procurement, real sustainability requires systemic change across three key pillars:

1️⃣ Creative systems change
2️⃣ Holistic & ethical talent development
3️⃣ Global Majority ownership & representation

“Those most affected by environmental degradation must lead the solutions.”

7Days A Week, 11am-7pm at 56 Carnaby Street.

Having the privilege of travelling to the Maldives to see Thilafushi and making the dispatches for @channel4 opened my eyes to how huge the global plastic waste problem is.
So when james asked me to be a part of this venture it was a no brainer. A shop in central London which provides a solution for plastic waste…. Of course!!
I’m very proud to have been part of something like this, this pop up wasn’t just a shop.
It was an idea to create a community. An idea to drive us to change how we create and think deeply about how useful are the things we create.
This project has changed my perspective on everything, but mostly made me have to think deeply about what are we contributing to the planet and what will be left for our children and our grandchildren.
If any of you had time to pop by and say hey you would have felt the vibe!
The team were a magical bunch of amazing people who have all continues this mission with their own creations. (Are You Making A Difference?)

🌍 Rethinking waste, reshaping the future.

@art.aint.trash caught up with Julian Brown /@naturejab_ at Hyde Park’s iconic Speakers Corner.

Julian brought together a community of his dedicated followers and like-minded activists using recycling and sustainability to drive real climate action.

In this catch-up, Julian / @naturejab_ delves into his creative process and his bold vision to find a solution to the issues which the current systems governing our waste and energy resources face. He also brings some exclusive @jabaroma_ products to sample and let me tell you first hand, they are AMAZING!

From local recycling habits to systematic resource management, the message is clear: the status quo has to change.
We must change our daily living habits, from how we travel, to the products we consume and clothing we wear. It all must change!

Keep an eye out for a special appearance by @ambushbuzzworl, along with a passionate crew of grassroots activists making their voices heard.

On August 15th, 1875, a true pioneer was born: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.

He was a Black British composer who shattered boundaries, commanded global acclaim, and proved that our voices belong in the highest halls of classical music.

Today, on his birthday, we celebrate his life, his genius, and the indelible mark he left on history.  Despite his massive global success, most notably with Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast; he was forced to sell the copyright outright for a small, flat fee. When he tragically passed away at just 37, his family received virtually no royalties, prompting widespread outrage across the industry. That injustice sparked a structural shift: his peers used his story as the key catalyst to form the Performing Right Society (PRS). In short, the reason modern creators are paid for their public performances today traces back to his fight for fair compensation.

To every Black musician, artist, creative, and business professional building a career and living off their craft today: his story is your story. Every time you step into a studio, collect a royalty check, or own your intellectual property, you are walking through doors he fought to push open. He navigated an era that wasn’t built for him, yet he created timeless masterpieces that forced the world to listen.
Because Samuel Coleridge-Taylor walked, we can run.

This doc (Presented by @immrdarcy - feat @che_lingo, @icxn, @guvnab, @namesbliss, @billionaireben and @roxannetataei) is part of our commitment at Art Ain’t Trash to championing his name every single year on August 15th, ensuring the next generation knows whose shoulders they stand on.

“Wear his legacy with pride, own your narrative, and keep building the future he paved for us. Our Ancestors did this so we can thrive...RIP SCT!”

(This an original Samuel Coleridge-Taylor composition. Featuring a rendition and arrangement of the piece by @roxannetataei - A Croydon based composer / sound artist / opera singer. This rendition was commissioned by @culturecroydon // @heritagefunduk as part of the 150 SCT Grants.)

Around 500 used coffee cups are thrown away in the UK every minute.. that’s roughly 2.5 billion cups per year – or 30,000 tonnes of waste. Unfortunately, only 2.8% of it is getting recycled.

The main catalyst for the many issues surrounding coffee cups all begin with how the cups are made. And that’s mainly due to the fact these paper cups are made using mixed materials and cannot be recycled using regular facilities.
In this video we explain that large quantities of paper cups are made using paper with a P.E (polyethylene) film, so they have to be sent to one of three locations who are equipped to separate the different materials in order to recycle them.
So we recommend using a re-usable cup or drinking your coffee inside…

FUN FACTS:
There was a huge surge in the use of reusable cups between 2017 and 2019. Argos reported a massive 537% increase in portable cup sales, and the government even hinted at a tax on their single-use counterparts.
But with the onset of pandemic restrictions in March 2020 came fears of germs, and most cafés refused to serve drinks in anything non-disposable.

Now it has been reported 17% of people who own a re-usable cup actually use it.

(Studies have shown, that after 15 minutes contact with hot water between 85-90* lead to 25,000 microplastics being released into a 100ml polyethylene cup.
Due to deterioration of the P.E (Polyethylene) films, ions like fluoride, chloride, sulfate, and nitrate were also released into the liquid contained in the paper cups.)
